Huawei E5830 MiFi / i-Mo gets free unlock tool, parties outside the USA

Nope, this isn't the MiFi that you guys are familiar with in the States; everyone else -- mainly 3 / Hutchison customers -- are given this cute-looking Huawei E5830 HSPA modem instead. If you want to join this exotic MiFi party but would rather boogie with a different carrier, then fear not, as ex-iPhone hacker Zibri's just released a free unlock tool. It's pretty easy -- just plug in your MiFi (with its preloaded SIM card inside) into a Windows machine, launch the program, type in "Success! :)" to unveil the unlock button, and you know the rest. Of course, as with all unofficial hacks there's always a risk somewhere, so proceed with caution.

Nokia wants you to make an Ovi app out of your Twitter feed, launches Ovi App Wizard

To anyone who’s ever written a line of code, pre-canned/auto-generated apps are the scourge of the App Store world. For anyone who just wants to be able to say “Me? There’s an app for that! LOL!” without having to dedicate their lives to waging war against semi-colons and pouring through documentation, however, they’re a god [...]

Talkatoo: Tell your kids every little thing’s going to be alright

I just got back from the New York Toy Fair and saw quite a few great items, including this clever little thing called the Talkatoo. It’s a little tag that can record your voice and then attach to your wee one’s backpack or bag. When your kid is upset at Day Care or on a [...]

Fear not, people who jailbreak your 3GSes! PwnageTool for the latest firmware, 3.1.3, is available and ready to crack, hack, and otherwise damage your iPhone. I’ve stopped hacking my 3GS simply because too many things break after unlock. You should also keep your “SHSH hashes” backed up (basically keep the keys to previous versions lying around [...]

  • Pedal Brain’s Gadget Turns Your iPhone Into A Powerful Cycling Computer

Pedal Brain’s Gadget Turns Your iPhone Into A Powerful Cycling Computer

For years, runners have been able to take advantage of Nike+, a nifty accessory that lets your iPod communicate with your shoes to turn it into a personal running coach of sorts. Soon, cyclists will have access to a tool that's in the same vein as Nike+, but far more powerful. It's called Pedal Brain, and it allows your iPhone or iPod Touch to receive and interpret data from a variety of exercise devices that use the ANT+ wireless protocol. ANT+ is used by cyclists (including many professionals) to accurately measure and analyze their performance over a ride, but until now there hasn't been a way to connect these devices to your iPhone. That's where Pedal Brain comes in. The bootstrapped startup is making a small device called the Pedal Brain Synapse that plugs into your iPhone or iPod Touch and allows them to receive this data, which is then interpreted by an iPhone app. The application shows you how you're performing in real-time (you'll want to mount your iPhone in plain view) and can also use GPS to show the position of your team members.

Robocops to roam the streets of San Jose

According to the Mercury News, cops in San Jose will soon be wearing head-mounted video cameras to record their interaction with civilians. The devices will sit above their ears and they will be activated whenever they speak with a citizen or suspect. The videos will then be uploaded to a central server. Presumably these things turn off when the officers are in the toilet. Why is this happening? Because people don't trust cops right now. The system, called AXON, can also attach to other parts of the body.

DECAF, the anti-Microsoft COFEE, pulled. It was a stunt designed to rally y’all.

Ladies and gentlemen: we were worked. The other I mentioned DECAF, which was promoted as the anti Microsoft-COFEE. While I still don't understand people's fascination with the forensics tool, DECAF promised to protect users against whatever the hell COFEE does. Only it doesn't: DECAF is a scam. Well, "scam" is a harsh word, more like "and let this be a lesson to you." I believe those are called "teachable moments" in politics circles these days. (See: that beer summit from a few months back.)

  • Verizon’s V CAST Media Manager — you guessed it — manages media

Verizon’s V CAST Media Manager — you guessed it — manages media

Verizon has hooked up with Smith Micro to offer a branded version of its QuickLink suite as V CAST Media Manager, a tool to corral music, videos, and pictures between Windows PCs and compatible phones. It integrates with Verizon's music store -- a business we're pretty sure everyone wishes carriers would steer clear of -- and imports playlists from other unnamed music management apps; as photos go, it apparently has some rudimentary integrated editing capabilities and lets you create slideshows on the fly. Maybe the funniest part of the whole ordeal is that of the 19 phones currently supported, one -- just one -- is a smartphone: the original BlackBerry Storm 9530. Yeah, your guess is just as good as ours on that one.

Oh, TLA Systems, you clever, clever bastards. VPlay brings video mixing to Surface, seriously improves Microsoft’s office parties

For most people, there is only one name that matters in the world of Microsoft Surface / "rave" integration. And that name? Al Roker. But that hasn't stopped the company from continuing to develop new and innovative ways to show off its super-sized touchscreen device in the milieu of clubland. VPlay, for instance, is a live video mixing tool that allows one to display video clips and live images, manipulate effects, and concoct some pretty complex signal paths with your bare hands. Interested in giving this one a spin? No word yet on a commercial release, but do make sure you peep the video after the break.
