US Cellular Tease HTC Desire Details And Release Window
Posted on April 28, 2010 | No Comments
On their Facebook page today, US Cellular today teased an "around July" release for the HTC Desire (previously known as the Bravo).
The device, in case you didn't know, is basically a Nexus One in Sheep's (or HTC's) Clothing (which includes Sense UI), but with a few differences.

Details and official pics of the HTC Desire, Legend, and HD Mini leaked
Posted on February 15, 2010 | No CommentsMan! Mobile World Congress is all about the last-minute leaks this year. First, a tiny glimpse of Windows Phone leaked out just hours before it became official. Now, three brand-spankin’ new handsets from HTC have just leaked out, just one day before HTC’s press conference where we can only assume these devices were supposed to [...] -
HTC Legend spotted in the flesh, looks exactly as expected
Posted on February 8, 2010 | No CommentsThere isn’t much to be said about a few in-the-flesh images leaked about a device we’ve all heard of other than the confirmation of a few things. To start, it looks identical to renders seen in the past, and the images depicted in HTC’s handset line-up which was leaked back in early December. The form factor [...] -
BlackBerry Essex sighted with Sprint branding (update: probably not)
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsWell, we've been seeing the BlackBerry Essex out in the wild for quite a while now, but this is the first time we've seen it with some Sprint branding, which we're sure is enough to get at least some folks plenty excited (or regretful as the case may be). As most BlackBerry fans are no doubt well aware, the Essex is a Tour refresh that, among other things, adds some much needed WiFi capabilities to the phone, and ditches the Tour's trackball in favor of a trackpad. Of course, this still isn't a done deal just yet, especially considering that the branding seen is only in the OS and not on the device itself -- not to mention the fact that the phone seems to have a curiously crooked trackpad. Hit up the link for a closer look.
Update: As we'd mentioned, the trackpad looks vaguely weird -- and on closer examination, it looks downright uncool when you're zoomed in. We're thinking this probably nothing more than a Tour with a Bold 9700 pad 'shopped on; have to admit, though, the dude did a decent job. Thanks, Boy Genius!BlackBerry Essex sighted with Sprint branding (update: probably not) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 14:26:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Google employees given HTC-made Google Phones, January launch imminent?
Posted on December 12, 2009 | No Comments
TechCrunch was certain that rumors of a pending honest-to-goodness Google Phone were the real deal, and now according to the site, Google employees are already tweeting with the devices in hand. If you believe what you see on Twitter, Google drones were given the HTC-designed handsets at an all-hands staff event, and the phone is quite a looker. One tweet reads "ZOMG we had fireworks and we all got the new Google phone. It's beautiful." while another says the phone is "Like an iPhone on beautifying steroids." One other, non-Google user on Twitter who's seen the device says that the device is a bit thinner than the iPhone, has a trackball (a la Hero), and has no physical keyboard... which sounds like the Bravo / Passion we've seen a lot of lately (and we hear is coming to the US soon). Apparently the device is running Android 2.1, is unlocked and AT&T-ready (no word on 3G status, but this could line up with our speculation about this being the carrier's first Android phone), and will be due sometime in January. We're guessing if that last bit is true, it will coincide with a CES announcement, but anything could happen at this point. If the device is out in the wild in such a big way, an end of the year press release wouldn't shock us either; of course, it's entirely possible that this is going to end up becoming the Android Dev Phone 1's true successor or an elaborate prank on Google's part in response to the rumors that have been building steam over the past couple weeks (they're crafty and they have a sense of humor -- it could happen). Anyhow, check out one of the tweet-tears after the break, and stay tuned for more info!
Update: Google all but confirms that devices are floating around on campus in a post on its blog:
Not only that, but TechCrunch has more details on the device, claiming it will be a Google controlled, HTC-built model actually dubbed the "Google Phone," and will feature a "super high resolution OLED display," a Snapdragon CPU, a mic on the back of the phone that helps to eliminate background noise, is "really, really fast," and most importantly, will be sold unlocked. Essentially, TC claims that the phone will function on any GSM network you throw at it -- we assume that means an extremely rare pairing of both T-Mobile and AT&T 3G bands in the radio. Of course right now this is all speculation and hearsay -- until we get some solid facts (and maybe a device or two on camera), don't pull out the credit card just yet.We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.Continue reading Google employees given HTC-made Google Phones, January launch imminent?

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXLII: Aphone A6 is all about Android, aping Apple (video)
Posted on November 16, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Apple, Android
An Android and iPhone hybrid isn't exactly new (hello, OPhone), but at least we can say this has a trackball. In fact, you might even mistaken this for iPhone OS at first glance, it's just that kind of doppelganger. The fine details, you say? The GSM (EDGE only, no 3G) device sports a 3.5-inch LCD display with capacitive multitouch, 2 megapixel camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, and the part that really bests it over Apple's offering, a trackball! Huzzah! Video after the break.

HTC Desire with Sense UI and Verizon branding spotted
Posted on October 22, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless, Android
Verizon's on a roll with Android handsets these days, first with the heavily-advertised Motorola Droid and the reclusive / unannounced Calgary, and now with this fleeting glimpse of Android hardware progenitor HTC. Yes, it's got 3G (or the Verizon equivalent of it), Sense UI, a trackball just barely discernible on the bottom, and from what Boy Genius Report is saying no physical keyboard whatsoever -- all virtual. We're definitely sporting a Hero vibe, but really, would it really have too hard to find a decent light source for this shot?HTC Desire with Sense UI and Verizon branding spotted originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 16:22:00 EST. BlackBerry Bold 9700 launching on domestic and European GSM carriers in November
Posted on October 21, 2009 | No Comments
The BlackBerry Bold 9700 has finally been announced. Details have been leaking in about the "Onyx" for months and most of the seem to be true in hindsight. The BlackBerry Bold 9000 successor rocks a Tour-like keyboard but ditches the trackball in favor of a little trackpad like in the Curve 8520. The camera has been upped to 3.2MP and the screen is now a 480 x 320 display. Just like the Storm 2, the 9700 runs BlackBerry OS 5.0 and all the goodies are included like threaded messaging, updated BB Messenger, and BlackBerry Maps.
Best of all RIM is launching the phone to nearly every GSM carrier in North America and Europe in November although International carrier-specific pricing is hard to come by right now. That will probably change in a day or two though.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 announced, launching globally starting next month
Posted on October 21, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, BlackBerry OS
Properly replacing one of the most popular, recognizable BlackBerrys ever made is no easy task for RIM, but it looks like they've done a respectable job in officially announcing the Bold 9700, a device we've seen rumored as the "Onyx" through much of 2009. The new model gently massages the original Bold's time-tested formula by moving the camera up to 3.2 megapixels, giving the screen another 40 lines of vertical resolution (480 x 360, up from 480 x 320), and shipping with the brand new BlackBerry OS 5.0 out of the gate. Also notable is that the 9700 replaces the trackball with an optical trackpad --continuing a trend started by the Curve 8520 -- and will ship in both 900 / 1700 / 2100 and 800 / 850 / 1900 / 2100MHz 3G varieties, making the phone a perfect fit for AT&T, T-Mobile, and a multitude of networks in Canada and Europe. RIM isn't announcing specific carrier availability, but they're teasing that it'll be coming on "carriers around the world" starting in November. Follow the break for a quick teaser video from the boys and girls up in Waterloo.
Update: Engadget Germany is at the launch event with RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis. We'll be back shortly with a hands-on.
Update 2: T-Mobile just announced its flavor of the Bold 9700 for the US which it says will be the first BlackBerry that allows voice calling over WiFi.
Update 3: And here comes AT&T, which says the 9700 will be out in the "coming weeks" for $199 after $100 mail-in rebate.Continue reading BlackBerry Bold 9700 announced, launching globally starting next month

Samsung i5700 Galaxy Lite renamed Spica, spied and specced in Italy
Posted on October 15, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Samsung, HSDPA, Android
At long last, some apparently definitive details on Samsung's i5700, the handset formerly known as Galaxy Lite and now reportedly called the Spica. Italian site Cellularmania has a pretty exhaustive hands-on gallery and a much-coveted list of specs for the lime green HSDPA Android vessel. We're looking at a 3-inch AMOLED screen with 384 x 240 resolution, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 1500 mAh battery, accelerometer, GPS, FM radio... and yes, sad but unsurprising, it's soft-rocking a 528MHz Qualcomm processor. Unlike our last glimpse, there now seems to be that requisite Android home bottom on the right side of the lower panel, but no such luck for any trackball. We're also lacking price or release date details for any region, but at least for US enthusiasts, we're pretty confident that you shouldn't get your hopes up, given how the i7500 has been relegated stateside.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXXXIX: Genuine Android shipping on a counterfeit Storm
Posted on October 13, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Others, Android

Looks like someone in Shenzhen had time to kill overnight at the Storm factory -- and they've put it to good use. Instead of giving us a faux-BlackBerry with a horribly mangled KIRFed-out UI (or at most WinMo) what we have here is a genuine clone with a trackball thrown in for good measure running honest-to-goodness Android 1.5. Dubbed the Broncho A1, this guy features a 600MHz CPU, 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS, and an FM radio. That's the good news. The bad? 128MB RAM isn't going to do much for you, app-wise. Oh, well. Price and ship date to be announced at a later date. Get a closer look in the gallery below.

BlackBerry Curve 8520 now on Rogers
Posted on October 9, 2009 | 1 CommentFiled under: Handsets, RIM, Rogers Wireless, GSM, EDGE
You know what's screwed up? A CAD $99.99 (about $95) BlackBerry Curve 8520 -- you know, the cheap one -- being sold on the same carrier at the same time as CAD $79.99 (about $76) Dreams and Magics. Doesn't that seem a little out of whack? Not to mention the fact that Rogers is looking for three-year contracts all around here, and with all due respect to the 8520, the thought of committing to it for anything even close to the next 36 months sends shivers down our spines. The latest BlackBerry (and the first with a touchpad in place of a trackball) is yet to go live on Rogers' site, but apparently you can go ahead and pick one up this very second if you're so inclined -- just be sure to bring cash and your best contract signin' pen.BlackBerry Curve 8520 now on Rogers originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 05:57:00 EST. BlackBerry Bold 2 to be announced October 21 for T-Mobile, AT&T
Posted on October 8, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, BlackBerry OS
We have it on good authority that T-Mobile and AT&T both currently plan on announcing the Bold 2 -- also known as the Onyx -- on October 21. As a refresher, this would be the touchpad-driven piece with model number 9700 that's been making the rounds on the leak circuit the past few months, a fitting successor to a device that virtually every celebrity this side of Merle Haggard has been photographed carrying at once point or another. What we don't know is pricing or retail launch date, but at least this gives us a pretty hard target for when we can expect details -- so start cleaning out that Bold trackball, because you're going to have something to eBay here pretty shortly.
