Consumers Put 3D TV to the Test

By Sean Captain, Technologizer We’re hearing a lot about 3D television these days– from TV manufacturers, directors, journalists and pundits. But do consumers like it? And will they pay for it? To find out, I convened a mini focus group of adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s,; a teenager; and a pair of kids under 10. We met at the Samsung Experience store in New York City a few weeks ago. After watching a wild assortment of clips–from The Daily Show to a Dunkin Donuts commercial to Monsters vs. Aliens–they had a mildly favorable impression. But no one was jumping up to buy a new TV and a pile of expensive active-shutter LCD glasses. Since then, ESPN launched its 3D service with the World Cup. So I went back to watch the high-end sports coverage and talk to more folks. Everyone, on both occasions, found something to like. For a few it was sports—the World Cup and a basketball game. Others went gaga for Transformers 2, and one spectator really did enjoy the commercials. The viewers didn’t unanimously like any particular clip, however. And while younger folks were sometimes more enthusiastic, the adults were bigger fans at other times. No one wanted to shell out for the experience at home.

    • Striking 4.3-inch screen
    • 1GHz processor
    • 5-megapixel camera with flash
    • $199 with 2-year contract
    Pros:
    • Amazing screen
    • Great media features
    • Thin and light
    Cons:
    • Windows 6.5 with no current upgrade path
    • A bit big
    • Includes two Transformers movies
Short Version Pity the poor HD2. It's one of the most amazing phones I've seen all year but like some ultra-evolved dinosaur at the end of the Cretaceous period, it was born just as a cataclysmic asteroid (Windows Phone 7) was about to change the entire ecosystem. Still, for someone looking for a great media phone and one of the best Windows Mobile Phones I've ever seen, you could do worse.

A new Tron Legacy trailer for your edification

DWalk sent us in a tip about a new trailer for Tron. It’s been pretty hard to track down but I think we caught it in the wild. It’s nigh on unwatchable, but any artifact from a potentially horrible (but also potentially great (see Transformers v. Dark Knight)) movie that will destroy our childhood memories [...]

T-Mobile gives an HTC HD2 reminder, now with more fun!

Last week, T-Mobile teased us all with a little jab on Twitter about the HTC HD2 that it will be shipping soon. It was exciting and, to be frank, it made me a little antsy. As promised, T-Mobile announced new features for the HD2 at Mobile World Congress today and I've gotta say, it isn't all that thrilling.

Teaser Trailer For Transformers: War For Cybertron Looks Promising

I'm trying to remember the last good thing to come from the Transformers franchise and am sadly unable to do so. Well, that's not entirely true, the awful Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did have the magnificent Shia LeBeouf. Some girl named Megan Fox was also in the film, but no one really pays attention to her.

Review: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra video game (PS3)

I’m not sure where to even begin. In the months leading up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, I made the decision to avoid all trailers for the movie and opt out of all hands on demos of the game. I knew the movie was going to suck, but I had a glimmer of [...]

Transformers 2 coming to Blu-ray and DVD on October 20th, probably

Okay, so Paramount hasn’t official stated the Transfomers 2 release date, but we’re inclined to believe this sign. Why would Trans World Entertainment Corp (FYE, Sam Goody, etc) spend all that money to design and print signs if it didn’t know the release date? It wouldn’t. And according to the source, there is going to [...]

No, @Oprah doesn’t really want you to watch that pirated copy of Harry Potter

If you're following celebrities like Oprah, Michael Arrington, and Justin Timberlake you might find that folks are retweeting some odd stuff purportedly originally posted by the aforementioned celebrities. For example, I was watching Greg Grunberg AKA Matt Parkman from Heroes (and the co-founder of Yowza) and noticed he was being re-tweeted with a vengeance. The tweet was simply 'RT @greggrunberg guys watch"Transformers 2" Movie Free online here [snip] Wal-Mart' and it was sent out, in this case, by CarriCarrie012. A few clicks and we discover that young Carri is not "Goofy, intelligent, and determined!!!" as she claims in her bio but is actually a spambot. The bot essentially takes a celebrity's @ name and pretends to Tweet that they are supporting the viewing of pirated versions of major motion pictures for free, something someone like Grunberg would never condone (although I wouldn't put it past Oprah).

Review: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Xbox 360)

Movie licensed games have generally sucked something fierce. Very rarely are any of them ever any good, and the same goes for movies based on videogames. Something gets lost in translation. Development is typically rushed to coincide with simultaneous launches, and gamers are the ones who suffer the most. There are a few diamonds in the rough (X-Men Origins: Wolverine was pretty good), but they’re few and far between. Activision and Luxoflux’s adaption of the second Transformers cinematic masterpiece falls somewhere in between.
