The new Roku Netflix experience adds search, Instant Queue modification features
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No Comments
Woot! Netflix for Roku's wee little box will be updated "soon" for Netflix subscribers, adding search functionality that the service badly needed.
As you can see from this jaunty video, the entire UI has been improved and the standard "press left to see all of the other movies" is gone, giving you more movies per page and a considerably more streamlined experience. The best thing? You can now add movies to your queue from the box.
Click through for a video and a bit more info.

Study: TiVo, other DVRs don’t negatively affect TV advertising
Posted on May 4, 2010 | No CommentsReasonably interesting study coming out of Duke University that says that digital video recorders (TiVo and the like) do not negatively affect television advertising at all. That flies in the face of conventional wisdom, wisdom that says TiVo and its ilk have destroyed the TV business forever. Well, that's just not the case.

UK ISPs prepare for Digital Economy P2P fallout
Posted on April 13, 2010 | No CommentsThe Digital Economy Act passed in the UK, as you know, and it's pretty terrible. One of the more spicy sections of the law involved peer-to-peer use, and how it basically makes ISPs responsible for what their customers download. So if HBO finds that you've been download “The Pacific,” (really good show, by the way, much to my surprise) it can contact your ISP, who's then responsible for telling you to knock if off. If not, you face a truly horrible punishment: you're sent to Stoke! (That's a joke, people!)

iTunes 9.1 is live, iPad syncing, modded Genius Mixes added
Posted on March 30, 2010 | No Comments
Tunes 9.1 just went live. I'm digging through to see what's new in this version, but iTunes just updated to 9.1. It seems you actually have to go to the Apple.com/itunes site to download it because my System Update and the Update Software command in iTunes didn't catch it.

Apple TV could start offering unlimited TV shows for $30/month
Posted on November 2, 2009 | No Comments
Riddle me this: would you pay Apple $30 a month for unlimited access to TV, presumably coinciding with the actual network air time or shortly thereafter? Interesting, non?
PKafka has talked to some industry execs who have been approached by Apple in preparation of just that sort of thing. You pay $30 and get TV - on demand. The Apple TV would ignore the DVR market completely, instead becoming a sort of subscription-based cable TV service.

How to use RSS to automatically download anything from Usenet
Posted on October 17, 2009 | No CommentsIt’s the tree of life, and for no particular reason, either. As a corollary to Biggs’ “cable companies are doomed” article from earlier today, I thought I’d demonstrate how easy it is to accomplish what he was threatening. That is, live a happy and successful life without having to pay $100+ a month to Comcast, Time [...] -
What “on-demand” media really means and why your cable company should be scared
Posted on October 17, 2009 | No CommentsI’ve been angling to get rid of my TiVo and cable for some time now and I believe I’ve finally figured out a solution that works best for me. It involves a lots scripting, Sabnzbd, and HandbrakeCLI and I’ll tell you what I ultimately did next week once it’s stable but it seems to be [...] -
The Samsung R1 is a PMP, all right
Posted on August 31, 2009 | No CommentsThe “anybody but iPod” crowd has another portable media player to choose from, and it's from Samsung. It's called the R1, and it's your standard issue touchscreen PMP. It does play Divx-encoded video, which should be a benefit to those of you who haven't moved into Blu-ray rips, or who enjoy watching standard-def rips of TV shows on the subway.

PlayStation Home could stream TV shows, movies in the future
Posted on July 30, 2009 | No CommentsWe don’t typically cover PS Home updates at the ‘Gear, but the Sony PS team just dropped a tiny morsel of goodness and I feel compelled to tell you about it. The Movie Theater in Home is getting revamped with a 10-screen layout that PS Home Community Manager CydoniaX says could one-day stream full-length TV shows and movies. Nothing is set in stone so we’ll throw this one on the backburner for now.

Amazon is currently having a "Blu-ray Blowout" with movies as low as $9.99, categorized in $15.99 and Under, $16-25, and Over $25 groupings.
