    This week at CrunchGear, we're looking back at some of our favorite gadgets from the not-so-distant past — old phones, computers, media players, toys... those devices that still stand out in our memories despite their obsolescence. Feel free to contribute some of your own nostalgia. The Palm III was the first truly portable computing device I ever owned. Oh sure, I had a laptop at the time, but it was hardly something that could be considered "portable" in anything but the most literal interpretation of that word. The Palm III, though, slipped in my pocket, and went everywhere with me. Its clamshell design gave it its own protective case for the screen, so I didn't need to invest in fancy third-party protective gear. The Palm III traveled with me pretty much around the world, and it never let me down.

It's arguable that if this wasn't the decade of gadgets, it was certainly a decade shaped by gadgets -- one which saw the birth of a new kind of connectedness. In just ten years time, gadgets have touched almost every aspect of our daily lives, and personal technology has come into its own in a way never before seen. It's a decade that's been marked the ubiquity of the internet, the downfall of the desktop, and the series finale of Friends, but we've boiled it down to the ten devices we've loved the most and worked the hardest over the past ten years. We even had some of our friends in the tech community chime in with their picks on what they thought was the gadget or tech of the decade -- so join us for a look back at the best (gadget) years ever!

    HTC confirms it has Android 2.0 handsets in the works

    Of course nobody expects Motorola and Verizon to be the sole benefactors of Android 2.0's Donut-ey goodness in the long run, but in an age of increasing Android ubiquity it seemed odd to see them as the only ones with a more-or-less-confirmed Android 2.0 handset on the way. Well, Sascha Segan over at Gearlog did some digging and while Samsung wouldn't confirm any Android 2.0 work, HTC was forthcoming in saying that it's had Android 2.0 around for a while, and is working on it for future phones. Perhaps the HTC Desire (dubbed Droid Eris) or the Passion will be one of those phones? It would be odd to see Verizon introduce a 2.0 handset from Motorola and only 1.5 or 1.6 handsets from HTC, but we'll just have to see how it all goes down next month -- Motorola sure seems buddy buddy with Google on this one. But if Dell could track down a copy, we don't see how far behind HTC could be on this one.

    Book publishers’ latest hobby? Complaining about the Amazon Kindle’s success

    We're starting to see more and more “hate” being thrown Amazon's way. That's because, of course, the Kindle is something of a success, and publishers, who already operate a pretty wonky business (more on that in a bit), are becoming concerned that Amazon will soon be able to wield the same kind of power that Apple did over the music industry. Basically, book publishers don't want Amazon to “own” the digital book market.
