  • Dell Streak official: exclusive to O2 UK (update: launches on June 4)

Dell Streak official: exclusive to O2 UK (update: launches on June 4)

Let's all feign surprise now, as Dell has just gone official with its worst kept, though perhaps sexiest, secret ever. The former Mini 5 has been christened the Streak and is launching at the beginning of next month. The UK will be getting the first bite at this cherry, with the rest of Europe following soon thereafter and the US a disappointingly distant third with a launch "later this summer." If you've been living under a (Round) Rock, this is Dell's big foray into the smartphone market: a 5-inch supersized Android handset, housing a 1GHz Snapdragon, a 5 megapixel cam, 16GB of built-in memory (expandable to 48GB via MicroSD) and a customized UI. Curiously, Dell's opting to market the Streak as "the ultimate portable tablet pc" and would prefer that this device, albeit fully equipped to carry out cellular calls like a phone, not be called a smartphone.

We got a chance to play with it during a briefing in London recently, and frankly, aside from the snazzier paintjob, there's nothing new to report. Just like the prototype unit we've previewed to exhaustion, the device on hand was running Android 1.6 and Dell's skinning team hadn't yet laid on the goodies that we've been promised. The battery is the same 1,530mAh cell as before, and we even managed to get the browser to crash in the exact same fashion that our own Streak exhibits on occasion. Now that's consistency. We're not being told the specific Android version that the Streak will ship with, but a couple of flavors are being mulled over right now. Till we get more info, we suggest sitting back, relaxing, and perusing the gallery below for the roaring red number that's currently on show. It won't be available at launch -- you can have any color so long as it's black -- but "a range of colors and designs" will swiftly follow to sate any aesthetic concerns. Video and full press release after the break.

Update: The Carphone Warehouse listing for the Streak shows Android 1.6 as the OS with an "OTA upgrade available soon." Pair that with word direct from Dell that Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 are coming "later this year," and you can connect your own dots [Thanks, Azza].

Update 2: O2's website now has a precise date for us: June 4.

Samsung Champ is about as basic as a touchphone’s gonna get

Look, the Star was so 2009 -- if you're curious about Samsung's vision for high-function handsets in developing markets this year, look no further than this C3300K "Champ" that was announced this week. This 2.4-inch little guy takes us back to an era when 3G was just a twinkle in the GSMA's eye, featuring quadband GSM plus EDGE, a QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 2.1, and microSD expansion up to 8GB. You've also got an embedded stylus, dual loudspeakers, and a UI Samsung refers to as TouchWiz Lite -- which appears to lack full-on TouchWiz's infamous widget drawer, sadly. We wouldn't count on a North American release, but look for the Champ starting next month in parts of Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. Follow the break for Samsung's release.

Over the weekend, a fresh WinPho 7 ROM leaked its way onto XDA Developers, and with it came some juicy information. The leaked ROM was labelled as coming from a device called the HTC "Mondrian" (a nod toward WinPho 7's Metro UI). Since the leak, the studious fellows on the XDA forum managed to pick apart the ROM and reveal some tasty specs...

T-Mobile and Garmin-Asus have just gotten down to the nitty gritty with us on the long anticipated Garminfone: the phone ships in June for $199 on a two year contract. Just to show they're serious, they also let us play with the phone, which is running a speedy, heavily custom Garmin UI on top of Android. Check out some hands-on shots below, and stand by for more coverage of the handset as we get to cuddle up with it during some long, geotagged walks on the beach.

  • Google Goggles starts to get useful, adds text translation

Google Goggles starts to get useful, adds text translation

In our experience, about the only thing Google Goggles is good for is telling you that your can of Coke looks like someone's face, but the company's just-released version 1.1 sounds like it might be on a whole new level of awesomeness. Basically, Goggles can now recognize text within the "region of interest" that you specify on the screen then give you the option to translate it to any language of your choosing. Between this and Google's already quite good Translate app, Android devices are getting dangerously close to letting monoglots (thanks for the great word, Google) travel safely and effectively in foreign lands. Other improvements in Goggles 1.1 include better barcode and image recognition (thank goodness), an improved UI, and the ability to initiate identification from your gallery, so it sounds like a must-download if you've got a phone running Android 1.6 or better. It's available now.

  • Yet another so-called iPad killer surfaces, brings a 1Ghz CPU and Android 2.1

Yet another so-called iPad killer surfaces, brings a 1Ghz CPU and Android 2.1

Note to manufacturers and the Internet: Just because a tablet has the latest hardware, can run Flash, and rocks Android, doesn't mean it's going to take over the world. Like this Mastone Lifespad 3G. Technology-wise it's on par with the iPad with it's 1Ghz Freescale CPU, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, and 3G module. Then the Android 2.1 install somewhat tops the iPhone OS with multitasking and the works. But that doesn't mean it's an iPad killer.

The new Roku Netflix experience adds search, Instant Queue modification features

Woot! Netflix for Roku's wee little box will be updated "soon" for Netflix subscribers, adding search functionality that the service badly needed. As you can see from this jaunty video, the entire UI has been improved and the standard "press left to see all of the other movies" is gone, giving you more movies per page and a considerably more streamlined experience. The best thing? You can now add movies to your queue from the box. Click through for a video and a bit more info.

On their Facebook page today, US Cellular today teased an "around July" release for the HTC Desire (previously known as the Bravo). The device, in case you didn't know, is basically a Nexus One in Sheep's (or HTC's) Clothing (which includes Sense UI), but with a few differences.

TomTom Go Live 1000 blurs the line between PND and connected tablet

The dedicated GPS market is slowly but steadily shrinking as smartphones gain the same abilities, but yet the major players keep rolling out new devices. The TomTom Go Live 1000 bucks the trend of a semi-smart connected device and instead adds a ton of storage on top of a powerful setup to run a WebKit-based UI along with a ton of connected apps. This just might be the PND we've been waiting for -- too bad it's a few years late.

Zune HD hacked, entire hardware open to homebrew programmers

Potentially huge news for Zune HD owners—that means Devin and I. It has been hacked~! Yes, the good folks over at ZuneBoards have hacked the Zune HD to pieces, giving homebrew developers full access to the hardware, access that otherwise lay behind the XNA development kit. The Zune HD isn't too shabby, so I fully expect to see ports of popular emulators like FCEUX in no time at all.

  • Hands on with the Alex ereader

Hands on with the Alex ereader

The Alex ereader is out and I got to look at it today for a few minutes. The top part is a real epaper screen and the bottom part is essentially a small Android MID. The device has Wi-Fi and is available now for $399, shipping in May. The company had a few interesting points about their sales strategy. Their goal isn't to sell and ship devices, although their ereader will play epub, PDF, HTML, and TXT files out of the box. They are currently partnering with international publishing houses and periodicals and will work with those partners to create an web store as well as a unique UI for each device. In this way a newspaper could offer a branded version of its reader and offer it at a subsidized rate to online subscribers or a publishing house or book store could offer their own branded experience.

Verizon Nexus One to rock HTC’s Sense UI?

Well, well, well -- lookie here. See that screenshot over there? (Click through for the embiggened version) That's allegedly a screen shot of the Verizon Nexus One spec sheet, right off of Verizon's Intranet Equipment Guide. Now, look a bit closer. About 10 bullet points down. See it? "Sense UI (User Interface)". For those not keeping track, Sense is HTC's user interface mod for Android. It started off primarily as a much-needed visual overhaul, then came to include features like Flash in the browser. It's a pretty great addition to Android - and it's one thing that the currently available T-Mobile Nexus One is lacking.
