Hands-on with the Kapoosh Knife holder: Actually kind of cool
Posted on June 12, 2010 | No CommentsI saw this a few weeks ago and was impressed. It’s basically a universal knife holder that allows you to slap in any knife in your collection without having to have special holes in the holder. In theory, it seems to work, although in practice there are some complaints. I didn’t actually get a chance to [...] -
“Universal Packaging System” concept misses the point
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No Comments
In theory Patrick Sung's new design concept sounds good. A sheet of cardboard, perforated in such a way to make it easy to wrap around an item, all the time protecting it from damage during shipment. But that's where the good idea fails. Plus, I doubt the United Parcel Service will let him use their logo.

CoolIT now has a universal GPU liquid cooling solution, the Omni A.L.C
Posted on February 1, 2010 | No CommentsLiquid cooling is a funny thing. Generally each specific part needs a specific cooling adapter as there isn’t many one-size-fits-all solution. That’s still the case for most components, but CoolIT now has GPUs covered. The key here is the inexpensive, swappable interposer plates that attach directly to the graphics card. The other two parts, the [...] -
Oh look, POP247 video game, Blu-ray vending machines trickle into the UK
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsWould you buy a video game out of a vending machine? I certainly would, if only to avoid the phony human contact thrust upon me at GameStop. So these POP247 whiz-bangs are great. Too bad I've never seen one here.

Apple patent application details universal iPhone / iPod dock
Posted on December 10, 2009 | No CommentsDon't get your hopes up too much just yet, but it looks like you might one day no longer need to detangle a USB cable or fiddle with a plastic dock adapter the next time you want to charge or sync your iPhone or iPod. That's if this this recently revealed patent application for a new type of universal dock from Apple turns into an actual product, at least. The secret to the dock, such as it is, is that the base would be made of an elastic, sponge-like substance that could conform to any device and hold it in place. What's more, the dock would apparently even be able retain the imprint of your device for convenient use next time, and be reset at the push of the button to let you use it with another device -- we're not quite sure how this thing is supposed to hold up a tablet, though.Apple patent application details universal iPhone / iPod dock originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 16:46:00 EST. Support for universal micro-USB phone chargers grows with ITU approval
Posted on October 23, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Accessories
The entire wireless industry has been congealing around micro-USB as a universal charging standard for a while now, and we've taken yet another important step toward completely ridding the world of bizarre proprietary connectors (you know what we're talking about, Samsung) with ITU ratification this week. The UN-backed International Telecommunication Union isn't just making the move to make our lives a little less hellish, though -- it's also a strategic environmental move on a couple fronts, since universal chargers mean consumers will be able to hold on to a single charger over the life of several phones and modern chargers are far more power efficient than models that are even just a couple years old. The ITU move isn't binding or compulsory, but there's enough momentum behind micro-USB at this point that it's pretty much going to happen for any phone you'd ever consider buying going forward, and many of the big players have already hopped on the bandwagon. We won't lie, we won't miss the days of buying a $40 car charger that powers, like, two LG models.
