  • HTC Touch Pro2 unboxed with tempered excitement

HTC Touch Pro2 unboxed with tempered excitement

It's time for HTC's Touch Pro2 to join the ranks of every other modern phone in getting its own unboxing video. An enthusiastic PocketNow has the honors, and even goes so far as to utilize the infamous "smell test" to confirm it is in fact a genuine leather case included. Sized up to the original Touch Pro, it's got a more spread out keyboard, larger screen and thinner form factor -- all welcome additions, if you ask us. We can't imagine it being a deal breaker, but just so you know, the slide-out tilt doesn't go as extreme as its predecessor in that form factor, HTC's Titan. Living vicariously through video can be accomplished after the break -- it's not yet available stateside, but if you can't wait, there's always import.

  • Sony Ericsson adds Yari and Aino to its multimedia line

Sony Ericsson adds Yari and Aino to its multimedia line

Launch details for the Satio was the 800-pound news gorilla out of Sony Ericsson today, but slotting in right underneath that set are another couple of phones that are still very much in the higher end of the range -- the Yari and Aino. The Yari slider (pictured left) is being billed as a gaming device, featuring gesture-controlled actions in the same vein as the Wii (and for the record, that's Sony Ericsson's comparison as much as it is ours). It features a 2.4-inch display, GPS, and support for the company's PlayNow services; it'll be available in the fourth quarter for about €400 ($558) unlocked. Next up, the Aino takes some cues from the Satio with a relatively large 3-inch touchscreen -- but also tosses in a numeric slider for good measure. It's got an 8.1 megapixel cam, Sony Remote Play support, GPS, HSPA, and a scratch-resistant mineral glass display; it'll be ready to rock in the same timeframe as the Yari in black and white, though we don't have pricing stats just yet -- needless to say, it'll be more than the Yari.

  • Google’s altruistic Ion giveaway instantly rewarded with blind greed

Google’s altruistic Ion giveaway instantly rewarded with blind greed

Call it a sign of the times, call it a Google I/O attendee who just didn't really like the Ion, call it an overabundance of Western-style capitalism, call it man's almost instinctive need to generate profit -- whatever the case, one of the 4,000 specially-branded Ions given away at the conference this week is now available to the highest bidder. Never mind the fact that it's an I/O special edition, though -- outside of this particular device, we're not sure where you can find a 1700MHz 3G HTC Magic at any price, so we're sure this is going to be worth plenty of cold, hard cash to plenty of people who aren't in San Francisco at the moment. Oh, and don't worry if you miss out on this one; we'd be shocked if there weren't others in the pipeline.

  • Google Ion hands-on and unboxing

    Google Ion hands-on and unboxing

Looks like Chris' hatred wasn't totally unfounded. We just got our hands on a Google Ion -- which as you can tell is a spitting image of the HTC Magic -- complete with 30 days' worth of T-Mobile service on an included SIM card. It's not a public release model, but seems fully capable. Yes, it's got Cupcake, and while the portrait keyboard seems more cramped than the iPhone's, we found it very comfortable to type in landscape mode. Form factor wise, this thing is as sexy as hardware gets -- light, sleek, and thin. The only thing that exceeds our love for it right now is its own love for fingerprints -- seriously, the entire body and screen attract them like flies to honey. Colorful similes aside, hit up the gallery below for all the pics you could ask for.

  • Google I/O attendees getting free unlocked HTC Magic with T-Mobile 3G

Google I/O attendees getting free unlocked HTC Magic with T-Mobile 3G

In case you needed yet another reason to nerd out with Android developers for a couple days in scenic San Francisco, here's a doozy: every attendee is getting hooked up with an unlocked HTC Magic in black plus 30 days of voice and 3G data service. While the carrier isn't specified, we certainly wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being T-Mobile, which would make this an AWS version of the phone -- and a probable precursor to the presumed myTouch 3G release (or whatever they end up calling it) later this year. In the meantime, I/O attendees -- and yes, that includes you, Ross Miller -- we hate you out of sheer, raging envy.

    Update: Confirmed -- it's a T-Mobile SIM, hence AWS 3G!

Update 2: It seems Google is calling this phone the "Ion," but make no mistake, it's an HTC Magic.

  • HTC Touch Pro2 hits virtual shelves, unlocked and ready for action

HTC Touch Pro2 hits virtual shelves, unlocked and ready for action

Luckily we've got solid word of HTC's Touch Pro2 headed for all of the majors Stateside, or this would come as a bit more of a blow for the hopelessly selfish Windows Mobile users among us: HTC's QWERTY slider flagship is now available online and unlocked, though its Euro-centric nature means there's no 3G for folks who'd like to use it in the wilds of the United States of America. Still, there's plenty of greatness here outside the HSPA data, and the $800-ish pricetag doesn't seem too unreasonable for what you get. And hey, maybe you live in Europe -- we're not ones to judge.

  • Palm Pre to run $549 off-contract

Palm Pre to run $549 off-contract

We'd ventured a guess that the Pre would run close to $500 off-contract, and it looks like we were in the ballpark -- Sprint customer service is apparently telling people that Palm's first WebOS device will run $549 without a two-year commitment. That's just off-contract, not unlocked, mind you, so don't get any ideas about throwing this thing on Verizon. We're guessing most people will sign the papers on June 6th and pay $199 after rebate, so don't get too worked up -- just know that living a life free of attachment and responsibility will cost you $549 upfront.

    [Thanks, Dustin]

  • Exchange-enabled HTC Magic explained: it’s not a “with Google” phone

Exchange-enabled HTC Magic explained: it’s not a “with Google” phone

We've gotten the lowdown on that HTC Magic seen sporting Exchange support over in CNET Asia's capable hands, and as many readers opined, it's indeed a custom solution rolled by HTC without any Google involvement. Of course, HTC is no stranger to customizing OS builds loaded onto its devices; it already does this with every single Windows Mobile phone it sells, so we shouldn't be surprised to see some tweaks on its Android wares, either. Here's where it gets juicy, though: it turns out that Google forbids user of the "with Google" branding (as seen on the back of the G1, for example) when the build is customized, so the particular Magic that was being tested here lacked the Google name. Not all Magics are sold this way -- it's a carrier decision. Vodafone's version is Google-branded, for example, but in order to score the Google name they've got to comply to Google's standards for the software load.

Some unlocked Magics (like CNET Asia's) are being sold in this sans-Google configuration, but if you like your Google apps, don't sweat it -- these devices still have GMail, Maps, and the like installed -- it's strictly a marketing and branding issue we're talking about here. In addition to Exchange support, the HTC-customized Magics include a reworked Smart Dialer with better contacts integration, a "much more responsive and full featured" camera app, and additional home screen widgets not found on the Google-ified Magics. We know which version we'd choose.

  • Review: 2XL’s Supercross for the iPhone

Review: 2XL’s Supercross for the iPhone

Quick Version: Very few developers have pushed out games for the iPhone that are AAA titles, but even fewer developers have produced AAA iPhone titles their first time around. 2XL happens to be one of them and it’s no surprise that Supercross is one of the best selling titles for the iPhone and iPod Touch. They’ve managed to translate their console and PC experience that dates back to 1994 over to the iPhone platform without overdoing it like others have, and just keeping things simple. In other words - it's worth the $7. Extended Version:The first thing you see when firing up Supercross is the backside of a very sweet and charming UFC-like ringside girl while the intro video loads, which consists of video from events and credits of who did what. There are 13 tracks total, including a practice course with jumps, bumps and everything you’d expect from a supercross course. Three of the 12 racetracks are unlocked with the nine remaining courses waiting in the wings.

  • HTC Snap snaps to life, coming to US as S522

HTC Snap snaps to life, coming to US as S522

Since the Excalibur and Cavalier, HTC's shown an unhealthy aversion for the immensely popular portrait QWERTY format -- until now, that is, with the introduction of the rumored 12mm-thick HTC Snap. The Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard smartphone features a 528MHz Qualcomm core, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, 2 megapixel camera, microSDHC expansion, and the requisite QVGA display, all paired with AGPS, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, and HSDPA data. "What kind of HSDPA?" is the next logical question in that progression, and the answer is that you're looking at two versions of the device: one with 900 / 2100 for Europe and Asia, one with 850 / 1900 for North America (interestingly, the North American version won't be known as the Snap -- instead, it'll simply be called the S522). The new device also marks the introduction of HTC's "Inner Circle" feature, which can selectively pull emails from certain contacts to the top of your inbox -- the perfect way to ignore Terry from Accounting who's been on your case for the past three weeks about filing expense reports. Look for the Snap to launch globally this quarter, while the unlocked S522 hits "during the summer."

Nokia E71x arriving at AT&T stores, due out next Tuesday

Looks like the Nokia E71x is finally about to make its long-awaited entrance on AT&T -- Boy Genius says handsets are starting to show up at stores nationwide. If all goes according to plan, this slice of subsidized style will set you back $199 on contract when it launches on March 24 -- a price that sort of makes us wish we'd sprung for that one-day-only $289 unlocked unit on Amazon. Come on, AT&T, at least hit us with that super hot white version, will you?

White Nokia E71 arrives in America… on Cincinnati Bell

Whoa, wait up, what's this? On the very same day that Nokia's white E71 invaded North America via Rogers Wireless, one of America's least known carriers is following suit for those in and around the great state of Ohio. For reasons unknown, Cincinnati Bell (of all carriers) has managed to pick up the suddenly hot color of this here QWERTY-packin' smartphone, and best of all, it's available for free on a two-year agreement. What's next? Mexico getting this for -$100 after rebate?

    [Thanks, Jordan]

Update: You can also get this bad boy unlocked, if you're so inclined. Still, though, seriously -- much love, Cincinnati Bell. You're a prince among carriers for launching this for free on contract. Thanks, Chris!

  • Kogan’s Bluetooth GPS watch is not for the fashion forward

Kogan’s Bluetooth GPS watch is not for the fashion forward

If we have one word of advice for folks looking to get into the tech game (that is, besides "why bother?") it would probably be "set the bar low." Don't try to change the world with an unlocked 3G Android handset until you've mastered the basics, like maybe a netbook or, better yet, a watch. Of course, it would be a bit much to expect a true visionary to stop short of a humble timepiece. To this end, Kogan's rebranding that old Mainnav chronometer, the one that packs Bluetooth, a GPS receiver, a temperature sensor, speedometer, pedometer, altimeter, and Google Earth functionality into a package that most of us would probably rather not be seen wearing in public. Available for AUS $129 (about US $85).
