Ulysse Nardin’s Chairman is the steampunk Prius of phones

It's not the first Swiss watchmaker to decide to get into the phone game, but Ulysse Nardin's upcoming Chairman could very well take both the "most like a watch" and "most insanely badass" crowns when it's officially unveiled at Baselworld later this month. Billed as a "hybrid smart phone," the handset -- which, we assure you, you can't afford -- will incorporate a visible, fully-functional kinetic rotor that will apparently assist in providing power, just like you might find in a mechanical wristwatch. Beyond that, we know that it'll be unlocked, will be limited to just 1,846 pieces, and that Vertu should be feeling the heat right about now. Look for full details around March 26 when Baselworld kicks off, so in the meantime, get to work selling your car, your home, your children, and your soul, but not necessarily in that order. Depends on how deeply you love your car.

Shocker! Retail Core i7 CPUs caught using DDR3-1600 memory

The kids over at Maximum PC have told us a sordid tale involving Core i7 processors, "extreme heat and smoke damage," and a pair of jumper cables -- we'll spare you the details -- and have come to the realization that, contrary to popular belief, the retail version of the budget-minded Core i7 920 processor (and its midrange brethren, the 940) is shipping with unlocked multipliers and memory ratios. According to some "Deep Throat"-esque shadowy figure at Intel, the company chalks it up to a "marketing decision" made after receiving "requests from some of our customers." If this is indeed the case, customers will be able to rock the fast-paced DDR3-1600 memory without shelling out big money on a Core i7 Extreme Edition 965 CPU. And that ain't the least of it -- hit the read link for plenty of talk about QPI speeds and benchmarks. You'll be glad you did.

  • HTC black Magic (Sapphire) hands-on: a Vodafone exclusive

HTC black Magic (Sapphire) hands-on: a Vodafone exclusive

Make no mistake, the all-black HTC Magic is for real. Separated here at CeBIT from its glistening white counterpart by an equally white G1, this near-final Magic looked just stellar in its glossy dark coat. We chatted it up with an on-hand representative who confirmed that the handsets on display weren't absolutely finalized, and that when launched exclusively on Vodafone in Europe (you read that correctly), the Voda logo would be proudly plastered on. He stated that there were no immediate plans for selling an unlocked one in Europe or abroad, but that's just the standard line given when a carrier has yet to get their special toy. He also affirmed that HTC "believed deeply" in Android, and that the world at large would be seeing a lot more where this came from in the near future. Have a look at what these lucky Europeans will soon have access to in the gallery below.

Maemo 5 gets Alpha SDK, Nokia fans rejoice

Nokia has just introduced the Maemo 5 Alpha devkit, especially for all you adventurous software developers who just can't wait to get your hands on the beta. The operating system of choice for Nokia's next round of Internet tablets, the SDK includes the new UI framework and five (count 'em!) new APIs, including: Location (for building location-aware apps), City Information (obtains information including city name, country name, and country code), Time management, Vibra service (triggers and controls vibrations), and Device orientation. According to Maemo.org, all the APIs are unlocked, the thing includes no documentation except auto-generated API references, and it "features a simplified UI implementation of the Desktop and the Application Menu." Additionally, the new OS supports hardware-accelerated 3D graphics and WVGA resolution. What are you waiting for? Hit the read link and start developin'.

Google blocks unlocked G1s from downloading for-pay applications, upsets developers

Looks like Google is now preventing anyone with an unlocked G1 from downloading for-pay applications from the Android Market. Google says this is to prevent piracy (but only in the most abstract sense, in my [worthless] opinion), but some developers don't like the idea. Welcome to the Situation Room, I'm Wolf Blitzer.

Palm Pre launching in June, says Sarah Lacy

At CES, Palm announced that the new iPhone/BlackBerry/Android KILLA would be out in the first half of this year. This much we know for certain, but rumors of its price and launch date have already been floating around for some time. And now Nicholas Deleon's favorite person in the world, Sarah Lacy, Twittered earlier today that Sprint employees were already being trained on the Pre.

Tesla jacks up the price of the Roadster, hippies enraged

Tesla might be in bigger trouble than we first thought. The company has redone the options sheet for the upcoming year and took what was previously standard equipment, and slapped heft price tags on 'em. For instance, the High Performance Charger which replenishes most of the battery in 3.5 hours now costs $3,000. Plus, the alloy wheels now add $3,200 to the invoice; is the standard hub caps? Tesla claims that the changes were needed to turn a profit but it seems that the company is reneging on customers that placed deposits on Roadsters.

I'm totes down with the Traveler 137, the latest GPS phone from Pharos. I've used their GPS devices for years now and this one looks like a worthy addition to the pack. Sadly, it's a bit pricey: $599.95. It's completely unlocked, though and runs on any GSM network.
