Clearwire intros new WiMAX mobile hotspots, Mac-friendly 3G / 4G USB WWAN modem
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsLookin' for yet another avenue to hop on the 4G superhighway? Fret not, as Clearwire has just doled out a trio of new products intended to help you do just that. Prior to today, you had only a smattering of options to actually tap into Clear's WiMAX network, but the Clear Spot 4G (WiMAX only), Clear Spot 4G+ (dual-mode with 3G / 4G support) and Clear 4G+ Mobile USB stick have all arrived to give choosy moms more choices. The prior two are simply mobile broadband hotspots (think MiFi, but for 4G), with the 4G+ offering support for Sprint's 3G network if you happen to leave one of those few WiMAX zones already lit. The USB stick is particularly interesting, as it's the first dual-mode device hawked by Clear that's fully compatible with Apple OS X. The Clear Spot 4G will be made by InfoMark and available to purchase for $99.99 next month; those who hate committing can also lease one for $4.99 per month. The Sierra Wireless-built Spot 4G+ (a rebadged Overdrive; shown left) demands a hefty premium for that 3G support, with an MSRP of $224.99 (or least for $5.99 per month) and a similar July ship date. The 4G+ Mobile USB stick (shown right) will support OS X 10.5.x and 10.6.x (along with Windows, of course), and can be snapped up today for $114.99 or leased monthly for $5.99. Head on past the break if you're thirsty for more.

Sony announces portable DVD player with LED backlight and 7.5 hours of battery life
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No Comments
We have numerous super-light laptops, a plethora of netbooks, and the iPad to choose from. But some companies still produce portable DVD players. One example is Sony, which yesterday in Japan announced [JP] just that, the DVP-FX950. The player has two selling points: a 9-inch LCD screen that features an LED backlight and a battery life of 7.5 hours (up 25% from the previous model).

DIY Russian style: wooden USB drive
Posted on March 1, 2010 | No Comments
Here's a rather unique DIY project for you: a russian builder created a USB key design using a block of wood, a switch, and a fan. Why do you need a fan for a USB key you ask? Well, I have no idea. The only thing I can think of is the glowing LED lights inside the glowing logo need cooling? Honestly, no clue.

Fast food and donut USB sticks
Posted on January 25, 2010 | No Comments
Tokyo-based crap accessory maker Greenhouse has given us a plethora of gadgets that basically make no sense over the last months, and these new USB memory sticks don't look to be different. Much like the cork- and light bulb-shaped USB sticks Greenhouse released not too long ago, they don't offer anything special technically.

SushiDisk USB stick/cell phone strap
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No Comments
Tokyo-based gadget maker Solid Alliance has given us quite a few cool/whacky USB drives in the past, and their new sushi USB stick [JP] is a nice addition to the line-up. The so-called SushiDisk offers 2GB of storage, but that's not really the important selling point here, is it?

T-Mobile Tap and webConnect Jet now available
Posted on November 11, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Peripherals, Others, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Looking for a cheap full touch handset or a USB stick with 3G capability for T-Mobile? Heck, why not both? The self-branded Tap intro'd last month has now hit retail, bringing a 2 megapixel cam, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, and a choice of two hunger-inducing colors for $79.99 on contract. Coming alongside the Tap is the webConnect Jet USB modem, which can find its way into your shopping cart for as little as zero dollars -- $50 less than the older webConnect it slides next to in the lineup. Drop Android onto that feisty little Tap, sell it for the same price, and we're pretty sure we'd have a winner on our hands -- next year, perhaps?

You can connect it to your iPod or PC via USB 2.0 and listen to three hours of music after charging the internal battery for about an hour.

Bell announces HSPA+ Turbo Stick, MiFi for shiny new network
Posted on October 27, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Others, Bell Mobility, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPA
What good is a brand new 21Mbps beast of a network without some hardcore data devices ready to take advantage of it? Not much good at all, which is why Canada's Bell Mobility is Johnny-on-the-spot this week with a couple hardware announcements. First up, there'll be an aptly named HSPA+ Turbo Stick, which -- you guessed it -- is a USB stick capable of blazing along at HSPA+ speeds. Next up, lucky customers will be getting the MiFi 2372 from Novatel, the North American 3G version that we'd all love for AT&T to launch at some point. Both devices will be swinging by in November, just in time to christen the brand new towers on a high note.Bell announces HSPA+ Turbo Stick, MiFi for shiny new network originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 12:12:00 EST. Telus kicks off HSPA+ network with iPhone November 5th, HTC Hero, LG New Chocolate and more to follow
Posted on October 26, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, LG, Nokia, RIM, Telus Mobility, Apple
Telus already announced that it'd be launching the iPhone in November, but it's just now gotten official with an actual date: November 5th -- which just so happens to also be the day that it lights up its brand new HSPA+ network. Unfortunately for anyone hoping that a little competition would spark a price war, Telus is matching Rogers' prices across the board, starting at $99.99 for the basic 8GB iPhone 3G, and moving up to $199.99 for the 16GB 3GS, and $299.99 for the 32GB 3GS (all on a three-year contract, of course). What's more, Telus has also taken the opportunity to offer the first official confirmation of some of the other devices that'll take advantage of its new network, including the HTC Hero, the previously rumored LG New Chocolate (a.k.a BL40), the Blackberry Bold 9700, and the Nokia E71 (plus a USB stick, for good measure). No prices or release dates for any of those just yet, unfortunately, but the Hero and New Chocolate are apparently Telus exclusives.Telus kicks off HSPA+ network with iPhone November 5th, HTC Hero, LG New Chocolate and more to follow originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 21:10:00 EST. Epson Japan announces Dreamio projector with built-in DVD player
Posted on September 29, 2009 | No Comments
Only very few home electronics companies dare selling projectors housing a DVD player. There's a good reason for this: The things aren't really a picnic for the eyes, as this example from last month shows. And even established brands like Epson fail to deliver well-designed hardware in this niche. Case in point: Their new dreamio EH-DM30 [JP].

Only in Japan: USB stick lets users watch digital TV on their iPhones
Posted on August 5, 2009 | No Comments
In Japan, it's hard to find a cell phone that doesn't come with a digital TV tuner nowadays. Some of them even have two (so you can watch one program and record another on your phone's microSD). And some people in this country actually do use these tuners, which means the iPhone is at a disadvantage when compared to domestic phones.
Japanese customers could buy an iPhone-exclusive add-on, which turned their iPhones into portable TV tuners last year, but that device is now sold out. Now I-O Data takes another shot at the problem by releasing the SEG Clip [JP], a USB 2.0 stick that makes it possible to watch digital TV on your iPhone.

T-Mobile goes bonkers with the myTouch accessories
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No Comments
Ohhhh - so thats why T-Mobile ignored all of the good names, instead opting to call their HTC Magic the "myTouch": because they're working the customizability angle.
And boy, are they working it hard. At today's myTouch event, folks were given a USB stick with a little sneak-peek at what T-Mo had up their sleeve in terms of add-on toys.

JVC announces DivX-compatible Blu-ray player with USB port
Posted on June 29, 2009 | No Comments
JVC Japan announced the XV-BP1 today [JP], a new Blu-ray player that comes with two interesting features and a fair price. The player supports DivX/MPEG-4/MKV/AVCHD files and sports a USB port at the front so you can plug in a USB stick with your DivX-movies (you know, the ones you downloaded legally earlier) into the device and directly start watching.

Looks like we're about to see Qualcomm's ARM-based Snapdragon platform finally start to take off this year. One of the first devices out of the gate will be Lenovo's unique "Skylight" smartbook.

There are a few things worth noting about this particular product. First, it's a $5.69 USB mosquito repellent stick. Second, the product description says that it "can provide clean living or office environments to its user." Finally, it's on backorder. So just to recap: a USB-powered mosquito repellent that keeps mosquitos from swarming you inside your home or office is so popular it's on backorder.
