MeeGo 1.0 for netbooks and N900 now available to download

You've seen it teased, and now it's time to shelve whatever you had planned for this evening (or morning, depending on your current coordinates) and slap the first bona fide 1.x MeeGo release onto whatever device you've got handy. As of right now, MeeGo v1.0 for Netbooks and v1.0 for Nokia N900 are available for download, with the former supporting Atom-based machines and the latter supporting... well, we'll let you take a stab there. The API that's being released includes Qt 4.6, and while the current SDK is tailored for netbooks, the next version -- slated to hit devs in June -- will support "touch-based devices, such as handsets and tablets." We're also told that v1.1 will be outed in October, with the development tree already being open. We're certainly digging the layout shown here at a glance, but why not give that source link a visit and find out how it suits you in real life? We heard Snooki totally digs it, too.

    [Thanks, Ernst]

Verizon announces software update for Droid Eris coming in 2010

While Verizon might not be shoving the HTC Droid Eris down our throats the same way they are with its Motorola-made sibling, the Droid, the Eris is still one slick little piece of mobile kit. What it lacks in form factor (that is, a physical keyboard), it makes up with its drop-dead-gorgeous Sense UI. The [...]

Android Developer Challenge 2 Finalists Posted, Final Judging Begins

Early this morning, 200 Android developers woke up to one hell of an e-mail: they'd made it into the final round of the second Android Developer Challenge, and were thus one giant step closer to as much as $250,000. Android Developer Challenge 2 officially began way back in May, though the actual voting didn't begin until some time in September. The votes were split amongst Android users and Googlers (with the latter getting a 55% say), with all voting taking place in a special, custom-made application. To be eligible, applications had to be completely fresh (read: no updates allowed) to the Android Market as of August 1st, couldn't have been a part of the first Challenge, and must run on Android v1.5.

  • Saygus VPhone V1 hits the FCC, headed for Verizon next?

Saygus VPhone V1 hits the FCC, headed for Verizon next?

We had some indication that Verizon would have a third Android device ready by early 2010 in addition to the DROID and ERIS -- one that may be boosted by the carrier's Open Development program -- and it looks like the FCC may have now given us our first real look at it. While it's obviously still unconfirmed as of yet, this Saygus VPhone V1 phone that recently sailed through the agency certainly seems to fit the bill, and the company has even gone so far as to not so subtly feature an article about a Verizon's mysterious third Android device on its own website. As you can see, however, the phone itself doesn't exactly do too much to stand out from the current crop of Android sliders, but it should hold its own when it comes to specs. That includes a 3.5-inch 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, a 624MHz Marvell PXA310 processor, a 5-megapixel camera, a second, front-facing camera for video calls, built-in GPS, WiFi, a microSD card slot and even an FM radio, among other standard fare. Still no indication of that rumored WiFi tethering out of the box, unfortunately, but we're guessing this one could win quite a few fans if that pans out -- and, of course, if it's actually the real thing.

  • Paid Apps for Palm App Catalog coming September 24th?

Paid Apps for Palm App Catalog coming September 24th?

Considering Palm's lag in getting free apps into their store (there are right around 80 right now), we're not exactly expecting an onslaught once they open up the doors to paid apps. Either way, more apps are more apps, and we're always fans of anything that might make developers some change. After Palm accidentally leaked out v1.2 of their OS a few weeks ago, it was clear that it wouldn't be too much longer before paid apps hit the Pre. Thanks to a leaked table obtained by Digital Daily, we've got a better idea of what the exact date of roll-out might be.
