Posted on April 6, 2010 | No Comments
The HP Slate kicks the innards out of the iPad in so many ways. It has a faster CPU, a full OS, SD card slot, and a whole bunch more. But the Slate can't be double as a bookend. So there.

Encrypting your iPhone backups? Time to choose a better password
Posted on February 4, 2010 | No CommentsIf you’re using the backup encryption method introduced in iPhone OS 3.0 and your password is something like “cat”, “sex”, or “tetherball”, you should probably change it to something a bit more complicated. There be hackers wantin’ your goods! Password recovery software company ElcomSoft has just released an iPhone backup cracking tool called iPhone Password Breaker. [...] -
For your protection: In the UK, if you refuse body scan you won’t be allowed to board airplane
Posted on February 2, 2010 | No CommentsYou're certainly familiar with those full body scanners, installed at airports to prevent bad guys from bringing bad things aboard airplanes. They scan your body, producing a fairly clear 3D image of your naked body. It's controversial because, really, who wants their naked body on display so some goon in a uniform can try to see if you have a knife taped against your leg? Oh, that's your attitude, is it? Well then, no airplane for you! That got weird.

Recyclable mannequin robots
Posted on January 7, 2010 | No CommentsWe have seen mannequin robots already, machines that may sometime replace real models in fashion shows and similar events. Needless to say that the company behind those robots is based in Japan. And it was clear that the first robot maker marketing a new line of robots as "recyclable" would come out of the same country, too. And Osaka-based Eager [JP] is combining both ideas by offering recyclable mannequin robots.

Japan gets the Pentax K-x in “robotic colors” (limited edition)
Posted on October 16, 2009 | No Comments
The Pentax K-x was announced last month, and it seems to be a very decent entry-level camera. We already reported the device will be available in a few different colors in Japan, while the US only gets black, white, and red models. And today Pentax said in Tokyo [JP], they are ready to roll out a very special version of the K-x, which is a particularly colorful model inspired by the so-called Kore Ja Nai robo toy [JP].

HTC Hero gets done up in pink
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No Comments
When the HTC Hero made its video debut weeks before official announcement, it looked like we'd see this thing hit the shelves in a full array of colors, from Neon Yellow to Turqoise. By the time it became official, however, most of these variations had disappeared. By the time the press event wrapped up, we saw only two variations: one black, one white.
It looks like at least two more are in the works, however.

Posted on June 25, 2009 | No Comments
I blogged about Sega Toys' Pekoppa, the plant that listens and reacts to everything a person says, exactly 12 months ago. And the toy seems to have become a hit since then, as Sega Toys today announced the Hanappa, a Pekoppa 2 of sorts [JP, PDF].

Hello Kitty photo frame is almost too cute to be true
Posted on May 28, 2009 | No Comments
We blogged about a number of particularly cute digital photo frames in the past, but this Hello Kitty model beats them all. Announced in Japan by Sanrio [JP] today (Sanrio is the corporation behind the cartoon cat), the device goes on sale in Nippon on May 31. There will be two variations.
The Three Wolves shirt gained fame after it started collecting a bunch of clever reviews, and quickly became a bona fide meme. Once that happened, meta-memes sprang up around it. I liked the broken images variant the best. That is, until today, when I saw the Three Ewok shirt pictured here!
We just recently visited Japanese robot maker
