UFC’s Dana White throws down, vows to go after Internet pirates no matter the cost

Do not expect UFC to look the other when it comes to online piracy of its various pay-per-view events. Dana White, the company's president, recently told the Vancouver Sun that he and the UFC will do whatever it takes to eliminate piracy. "It’s gonna cost us a lot of money, but guess what, it’s gonna cost them [pirates] a lot of money. It’s gonna get to the point where it’s like, fuck it, maybe we shouldn’t pirate MMA anymore." This is not a very forward-thinking way of looking at the problem, no.

Themes strike BlackBerry App World with a vengeance

RIM's earlier announcement that UI themes would be gracing App World has come to fruition today, with both free and paid skins available -- the company had started taking submissions about a month ago, giving them a nice little head start for beefing up the catalog. Then again, if you'd rather roll your own, this all dovetails nicely with another of RIM's recent introductions: the introduction of BlackBerry Theme Studio, a simplified and unified way for slapping together everything you need to turn your Bold into a Pip-Boy. Technically, shouldn't this go into... oh, we don't know, something called Theme World?

  • STMicroelectronics’ 3-axis MEMS gyroscope gives a new level of control to your mobile

STMicroelectronics’ 3-axis MEMS gyroscope gives a new level of control to your mobile

Man, talk about timely. We heard right around 11 months ago that MEMS gyroscopes would be hitting an array of handsets in 2009, and while it's looking like that estimate will be just a touch off, you won't catch us kvetching with "early 2010." STMicroelectronics has just announced its new 3-axis MEMS gyroscope, which promises 360 degree "angular-rate detection for high-precision 3D gesture and motion recognition in mobile phones, game controllers, personal navigation systems and other portable devices." The gyro is said to provide two separate outputs for each of the three axes at the same time: a 400dps full-scale value for slow motion, and a 1,600dps full-scale value to detect and measure speedy gestures and movements. We're told that samples of the tech are available now with mass production scheduled for Q1 2010; and yeah PSP, it's totally cool if you keep sweating. NGage is about to be back... with a vengeance!

  • No, @Oprah doesn’t really want you to watch that pirated copy of Harry Potter

No, @Oprah doesn’t really want you to watch that pirated copy of Harry Potter

If you're following celebrities like Oprah, Michael Arrington, and Justin Timberlake you might find that folks are retweeting some odd stuff purportedly originally posted by the aforementioned celebrities. For example, I was watching Greg Grunberg AKA Matt Parkman from Heroes (and the co-founder of Yowza) and noticed he was being re-tweeted with a vengeance. The tweet was simply 'RT @greggrunberg guys watch"Transformers 2" Movie Free online here [snip] Wal-Mart' and it was sent out, in this case, by CarriCarrie012. A few clicks and we discover that young Carri is not "Goofy, intelligent, and determined!!!" as she claims in her bio but is actually a spambot. The bot essentially takes a celebrity's @ name and pretends to Tweet that they are supporting the viewing of pirated versions of major motion pictures for free, something someone like Grunberg would never condone (although I wouldn't put it past Oprah).
