Qik details its premium service tier, free until July 15 (video)
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsRemember how we said Qik was going to rock your world (and your credit card) with its premium-tier offerings for the Evo 4G? Well, as promised, June 4 is here and we now know exactly what you'll be getting for your extra $5 a month. The full table of goodies is after the break, but highlights include video conferencing at resolutions greater than 640 x 480, unlimited archiving of video, the ability to send video mail, and of course "priority support" should you have a problem handling the Qikening. The updated version of the app, demonstrated in a video below, is available today for the Evo 4G and users can get a taste of those sweet, exclusive features for free until July 15. After that, it's time to pay up or take the trip back to VGA Chatsville. Don't have an Evo? There's also a new version of Qik in the Market for lesser Android smartphones, but video chat is still not on offer.Continue reading Qik details its premium service tier, free until July 15 (video)

Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G put through its bandwidth-sucking paces
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsSo, since you're stuck paying $10 extra per month for "premium data services" (not that bad of a 4G tax, if you ask us), what wonders await you on the HTC EVO 4G, fueled by Sprint's next-gen network? Well, if these best-case-scenario tests we just did are any indication: everything you ever dreamed of. Of course, Sprint's WiMAX might end up stumbling up the steps of reality, but there's no denying that this is 21st century technology that's worthy of some of the excitement that's been lavished upon it. We just saw demos of Qik video conferencing, YouTube HQ (output brilliantly over HDMI), simultaneous data and voice usage, and even a straight-up speed test (4Mbps down, 1Mbps up, the latter of which is a hard cap). The phone performed brilliantly in each scenario, but of course that's to be expected when you have a 4G tower in the building. Check out the videos of all this breathless action after the break. Added bonus? All four (totaling about 100MB) were uploaded with our laptop tethered over WiFi to an HTC EVO 4G. Don't be jealous. Okay, be just a little bit jealous.Continue reading Sprint's HTC EVO 4G put through its bandwidth-sucking paces

iChat coming to iPhone OS 4.0?
Posted on April 9, 2010 | No Comments
Hey now now, what's this? On top of the previously discovered references to front-facing cameras and iChat within the iPad SDK, evidence is now appearing that suggests iChat -- likely with video conferencing -- will make its way to iPhone OS 4.0.

A call to arms: Reboot the public bathroom
Posted on March 6, 2010 | No Comments
Ladies and gentlemen, I am not a loquacious orator. I've never written an impassioned speech. I'm just a part-time tech blogger. But today I must do my best to motivate -- nay, to inspire -- you, the tech-savvy population of the Internet, to bring all of your design and engineering and user experience skills to bear on the problem of the modern era. Set aside your silly USB gadgets, and forget the Linux-vs-Windows debate. We need to concentrate on an issue that affects us all. Yes, I'm talking about the public restroom.

Jason Calacanis (absolutely does not) spoil Apple tablet event, drops no major details (update: not)
Posted on January 27, 2010 | No Comments
Jason Calacanis isn't a a nobody. He's a serial web entrepreneur, founder of Weblogs, Inc., co-founder of TechCrunch50 and CEO of search engine Mahalo (amongst others). And just a few minutes ago, via his Twitter account, he (possibly) dropped some major hints on the Apple tablet that's going to be presented tomorrow. Calacanis claims he has been given a tablet by Apple ten days ago, adding "For background: apple asked me to do press tomorrow on cnbc, cnn, etc.".
If he isn't pulling a major PR stunt (I think he isn't), Calacanis is stoked. Here's the gist of what he says about the device. I know many of you are sick of hearing about it, and this may turn out to be totally false info tomorrow - but what he said seemed just too interesting.
Editor's Note - Serkan has been beaten. There is nothing to see here.

Zii Trinity smartphone concept handled on video
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No CommentsIt's an all too brief look, but it's infinitely more than we've seen so far. CNET Asia has managed some hands-on time the Zii Trinity concept smartphone. Quite a looker, and here we also get a glimpse of it next to the good ol' Zii Egg. As noted by the narrator, the bottom proprietary slot can be swapped for microUSB or mini-HDMI, there's a notably-sized 5 megapixel camera on the back, as well as one on the front for video conferencing. Enough talk, take a gander for yourself after the break.
[Thanks, kumar]Continue reading Zii Trinity smartphone concept handled on video

Archos 9 tablet PC just now available for pre-order at $550
Posted on November 3, 2009 | No Comments
Although previously targeted for launch on October 22nd with a price tag of $500, it looks like Archos’ 9-inch tablet is just now available for pre-order on the company's web site and priced at $550.

It's crazy how the slightest little hint of something starts all the rampant speculation about Apple's product development. This is the third clue that the next generation of iPad will have a camera, if not video capability. It certainly explains the stuff that was
