    Videos: Toyota’s amazing violin-playing robot

Toyota has never been known as an auto maker that's really active in the robotics area (as opposed to Honda, for example), at least when it comes to producing robots with high show value. There are two exceptions though: one is Winglet, the Segway-like robotic vehicle Toyota showed in 2008, and the other is a violin-playing humanoid that made its debut back in 2007.

  • Sony Ericsson Aino’s new firmware update is all about the two S’s: stability and stamina

Sony Ericsson Aino’s new firmware update is all about the two S’s: stability and stamina

Alright, Aino owners, listen up: firstly, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. Secondly, we thought you might like to know that Sony Ericsson has recently released a firmware update for your phone that should make it a bit more livable. Improved system stability and better battery life are both promised, but that's not all -- it's said that you can also expect the WiFi and Bluetooth to work better at the same time (keep in mind they're both running at 2.4GHz, so interference between the two is a well-understood problem). Oh, and there are new features, too: support for MIME type mpeg4-generic videos, the Bubble Town 2 game, and 3 new Sony Ericsson-designed themes. All told, not a bad haul.

Sony Ericsson Aino's new firmware update is all about the two S's: stability and stamina originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 11 May 2010 13:40:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Videos: Watch Japanese soccer robots scoring “spectacular” goals

Remember the soccer-playing humanoid we've shown you Monday? Well, the “RoboCup Japan Open 2010″ [JP] he was taking part in during the last few days ended yesterday, but not before the yet to be named robot showed off his (limited) skills as a goalkeeper. And he faced an (apparently) stronger adversary.

  • AT&T On The iPad 3G Video Restrictions: “That’s something you need to ask Apple”

AT&T On The iPad 3G Video Restrictions: “That’s something you need to ask Apple”

Today in the U.S. people are getting their hands on the 3G version of the iPad for the first time. The hardware is supposed to be exactly the same as the WiFi-only version except, of course, it has a cell chip in it to receive data over AT&T's 3G network when you're not connected to WiFi. Since the hardware is basically the same, all the apps should function the same, right? Wrong. Reports are already coming in that some of the most popular iPad apps -- the ones that stream video -- are being restricted on the new iPad 3G. Specifically, the YouTube app scales videos down to a "dramatically lower resolution over the cellular data connection," according to iLounge. Worse, the ABC Player apparently won't work at all unless you connect to a WiFi network, as a pop-up message informs the user. But apparently iTunes Store streaming video previews are working just fine in full resolution. No word on the Netflix app just yet.

Videos: Tower robot Tsutenkaku conquers Akihabara, meets Asimo

Remember Tsutenkaku, "the world's biggest" robot? Tsutenkaku, basically a 170cm tall robot that looks like a city tower, recently made the journey from Osaka (where he was made and is supposed to attract tourists) from Tokyo. Needless to say, he first went to Akihabara, Tokyo's robot geek paradise, and while he was there, Tsutenkaku met Honda's famous humanoid Asimo, too. Tsutenkaku looks weird on pictures, but he's actually much, much weirder on video.

And the new and improved Asimo, which took 13 years for Honda to develop (P3 was unveiled in 1997), looks much more elegant and human astronaut-like than the previous models.

TwitCasting lets you stream live video and tweet simultaneously from your iPhone

Late last year, Ustream and qik launched iPhone applications that let you stream videos from the iPhone to the web and allow others to watch them as they're being recorded. And now there is an iPhone app called TwitCasting Live (iTunes link), which offers the same basic functionality, but is - as the name suggests - much deeper integrated into Twitter. The free app is essentially a live streaming app and Twitter client rolled into one. TwitCasting Live splits the iPhone screen in half, allowing you to view your Twitter timeline, update your status, access the web etc. on the bottom half, while recording (broadcasting) video on the top.

Well this is interesting. Generally end users need to rely on 3rd party manuals and a bit of experimenting to tear apart a gadget. Video: Hasty hacker hobbles together a Windows Phone 7 skin for older WinMo phones

Wowza. Consider me impressed. It took Microsoft 3 years to develop Windows Phone 7 Series -- but its only taken 2 weeks for some far-too-talented dabbler to recreate the look and feel of the new OS as a skin for older Windows Mobile handsets, relying on nothing but screenshots and demo videos. Get ready for tons of fake Windows Phone 7 videos and people saying "No! Seriously! I swear my buddy has Windows Phone 7 on his 3 year old WinMo handset!".
