    Virtual Mirror: augmented reality without glasses

    The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute -- the same Fraunhofer that holds many of the patents on MP3 -- have a booth at CEATEC exhibiting some of their research efforts, shopping them around for potential licensees. Their Virtual Mirror display is, I think, a great example of augmented reality done right. It uses a camera, a display, and their special software to dynamically alter the image projected back to the viewer. Video inside!

    Augmented reality (AR), also known as mixed reality, is currently a hot topic in the technology world after it has been regarded as too futuristic for the last couple of years. The idea has been around for quite some time now: Combine the real world with computer-generated data, for example graphics. But it probably takes companies of Canon's caliber to raise awareness that AR isn't some second "virtual reality" hype but has the potential to become a technology that can change our lives. The company is stepping up research in this area, as demonstrated during a virtual reality expo that took place in Tokyo last month.

    Disney reveals plot and title for new Tron movie

    A sequel for cult movie Tron was rumored to be in preparation for years now, and today Walt Disney Pictures has finally revealed a few tidbits of information about the reboot of the "virtual reality film". It will simply be called Tron (and not Tron 2, Tron 2.0 or "Tr2n") and we'll be able to see some footage very soon. Disney said they will show a 3D clip from the movie during the Comic-Con in San Diego on July 23. The poster is from the first movie, which was made back in 1982 (and has aged pretty well).
