  • Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight… fight! (video)

Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight… fight! (video)

By now you know that (one of) AMOLED's Achilles' heel is readability in direct sunlight. But Samsung's been working hard to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology. Techblog took the display to task by pitting the Samsung Galaxy S (4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED) against the HTC Desire (3.7-inch 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED) and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel TFT LCD). It's clear from the video embedded after the break that the LCD still has the edge in the harsh Greek sun, but the Super AMOLED certainly makes a much stronger showing than its AMOLED sib. In fact, differences in visibility between the LCD and Super AMOLED are often indistinguishable, like the picture above. That'll be good news for us just as soon as Samsung can start meeting demand... regardless of what Stevie J has to say. Check the video after the break and be sure to click the source for some more side-by-side pics, including a few taken indoors where that Super AMOLED display really shines.

Best Buy now hawking Viliv’s wares

Viliv makes some hot, little portables. That's a fact. The X70 and S5 touchscreen along with the S7 convertible netbook are among the best in their respective niche markets. But previously the products were only available from online retailers, which of course limits their visibility from a whole segment of potential customers. Starting Monday though, Best Buy shoppers will be able to pick up the products in store and online. There will even be an instant rebate available on the none-3G modem-equipped models.

Samsung S8500 becomes first Bluetooth 3.0 approved handset

There is nothing more satisfying than claiming to be the first at anything, and so far this week, Samsung must be pretty happy with itself. After announcing its plans to mass produce AMOLED touchscreens, the first to include built-in touch functions, Samsung’s S8500 will be the first consumer handset to feature Bluetooth 3.0. The Bluetooth [...]

Skyfire 1.5 Brings A New Interface And A Bunch Of Polish

Skyfire has come a long way in the past few months. Since shedding the Beta tag back in May, it has grown into what is easily one of the best mobile browsers around. If nothing else, it's still the only cross-platform mobile browser able to churn through Flash 10, Silverlight, and a ton of other media formats generally reserved for the PC. Today, Skyfire is launching version 1.5 of their browser for Windows Mobile. In addition to the standard performance enhancements you might expect, v1.5 also brings a number of enhancements aimed at touchscreen users.

Palm catalogs webOS apps online for all to see

Being the new kid on the block is always tough, especially when the guys who have been around always seem to be a few steps ahead of you. Palm certainly knows how that feels: after launching the hardware equivalent of a Hail Mary pass in a market that’s already saturated with smartphones, the pressure has [...]

  • BlackBerrys for coppers: UK law enforcement to smarten up in 2010

BlackBerrys for coppers: UK law enforcement to smarten up in 2010

Police men and women of Blighty are about to step into the 21st century, albeit a decade late, with a new weapon in the fight against boredom on the beat. The BBC reports that smartphones will become standard issue throughout the Queen's realm by March 2010, as a result of successful trials carried out in 30 constabularies through this year. Improved "operational efficiency" and reduced bureaucracy are argued as the key benefits, with a solid 30 minutes less time being spent in police stations each day. And we're absolutely positive that extra half hour will go toward increased "visibility in the community" and not checking out friends' Facebook status updates. No, really!

Digital monkey wrench costs $323, tells you when bolts are tight

ratchetHo-ly crap. For $323 plus $20 shipping you can get a digital monkey wrench that tells you when whatever bolt you're tightening is tight enough. All these years I've been relying on the old "it doesn't turn any more, so it must be tight" rule.

  • Palm Pixie is real, but may never materialize

Palm Pixie is real, but may never materialize

Lots of excitement today over a second Palm WebOS device now that the Pre has launched. The only problem is that none of this is news. We broke the story about the device, code named Pixie, on April 29. A day later we had the Pixie name and additional details. As far as I can tell there are no additional details coming out now. So I'll supply additional information that we've gathered. Our sources in Asia tell us that Palm continues to push development of the device but is far from making a launch decision. "Palm has decided to put the Pixie on hold until they have better visibility into how its current models are selling in the market." Our guess is that low Pre sales rates make it less likely for the Pixie to hit the market this year. Palm's WebOS is the best mobile operating system in existence, in our humble opinion. But the hardware is, at best, a B.
