Why is World of Warcraft encouraging me to vote?
Posted on April 12, 2010 | No CommentsWell this is a strange one. I just received in the mail (that’s “real” mail, not e-mail) an official letter from the National Association of Secretaries of State encouraging me to take advantage of all these fancy ways of keeping up-to-date with voting information. The letter took great pains to stress that the program, which [...] -

FCC starts up white spaces database, devices now inevitable
Posted on December 1, 2009 | No Comments
White space devices seem likely to play a major part in the FCC's solution to the wireless spectrum crisis. Operating in the buffers between frequencies used by television broadcasts, these devices will be able to exploit TV's airspace without interfering with the incumbent users' traffic. The unlicensed utilization of white spaces has been approved going on for a year now, but really important government stuff has gotten in the way of making that vote a reality. It was only recently that Claudville, Virginia got the very first such network, and initial results show that it hasn't disrupted any of the fine, fine programming percolating the local airwaves. The only issue we see is that your WSD will need to be capable of both identifying its own position by GPS and hooking up to the database to find out what bands it may use, but then it's not like anyone sells smartphones without these capabilities nowadays, is it?FCC starts up white spaces database, devices now inevitable originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 06:06:00 EST. That said, I'm proud to show you the 11 best costumes in this line-up, as judged by all of us at CG. I added one extra because we just couldn't bear to choose between the various Iron Men we saw. Video: Eh, a video of the PSP Go
Posted on June 26, 2009 | No CommentsWell how do you like that? It seems Sony was in town here in New York showing off the PSP Go. (I refuse to use that dumb exclamation point anymore.) Of course, CrunchGear wasn't invited to play with it, to my knowledge, but let's not complain about that today, on this very sad day for us all. Anyway, Cnet got to play with the device, and put together this snazzy video. Let's watch it!

iPhone 3G S or 3GS? Apple Needs a Copy Editor
Posted on June 22, 2009 | No Comments(Warning: The following is a silly, intrinsically useless post about copy style.) The space in the name of Apple’s new iPhone — “iPhone 3G S” — is the bane of a copy editor’s existence. (How do you pluralize the thing?) Here at Wired.com, our copy desk voted to eliminate it. Most amusing is that Apple [...]

I can't come up with a good reason why Computer Engineer Barbie is more socially-forward than Environmentalist Barbie, Surgeon Barbie, Architect Barbie, or News Anchor Barbie. It probably has something to do with a fantasy I share with nearly every other computer nerd. Whatever.
