Firefox Mobile for Android launching “late this year”

Are you an Android user? Are you jealous of all nine people who have Nokia N900s and thus can already use Firefox Mobile? Good news! While we’ve known for some time that Firefox Mobile (otherwise known by its code name, “Fennex”) was coming to Android, but we didn’t have the slightest idea when. The guys over [...]

Ovi Maps: 1.4 million downloads to date, averaging a download per second

I'm starting to suspect people like free stuff - a shocker, I know. Nokia says the new version of Ovi Maps that includes free walk and drive navigation has been downloaded over 1.4 million times since its introduction on 21 January 2010. Nokia says the 1 million mark was reached after just one week following the launch, and the company's Executive VP Anssi Vanjoki adds that they're currently seeing 'a download a second, 24 hours a day'.

  • Flurry: App Store Sees Record Breaking Christmas, 50% Growth from November to December

Flurry: App Store Sees Record Breaking Christmas, 50% Growth from November to December

As predicted here on MobileCrunch earlier this month, Apple rocked it this holiday season, and the early numbers are showing it. According to Flurry, the biggest mobile app analytics company, iPod Touch download volume saw a nearly 1,000% jump in downloads on Christmas Day. Overall, the App Store saw a 51% increase in downloads from November to December (downloads only increased by 15% from October to November). Christmas also marked the first day that iPod Touch app downloads surpassed iPhone app downloads, which makes sense (the iPod Touch is a more common gift than an iPhone; more on that later). Furthermore, the Android Market saw a nice 20% bump in app sales as well, sparked primarily by an uptick in downloads from the Motorola Droid.

Nook shipping update: Pre-ordered Nooks should arrive before Santa

I have some good news and some bad news for those waiting for their Nooks to be delivered. The good news is I just got word from a B&N VP that if your Nook initially had a pre-Christmas delivery date, it will be there in time for Christmas morning. But this also means that you're not going to get that $100 BN.com gift card. Sorry. But at least your significant other will be unwrapping a Nook instead of a lame IOW certificate. Also, new orders will not ship out until February 1, 2010 so you may want to hold on to your money a bit longer. Your local B&N store might get a few before then. B&N's full statement is after the jump.

Oh, so the Chevy Volt song and dance was for 12-year olds, it’s still not right

This makes a bit more sense. Apparently the horrendous Chevy Volt dance routine that hit it big a few days back wasn't meant to be seen by me or you. It was wrote for 7-12 years and was shown during a webcast that involved 120 schools before the L.A. Auto Show. But of course everyone has a video cam these days and someone captured the event for the whole world to enjoy.

  • Acer planning ‘five or six’ Android sets in first half of 2010

Acer planning ‘five or six’ Android sets in first half of 2010

Alright, let us try out a new term were testing on you: "Androidsplosion." Does that do anything for you? No? Well, that's pretty much the kind of cluster we're going to be running into with the Android camp come the first half of next year thanks to a rumored bumper crop from HTC, some Sony Ericsson gear, undoubtedly a few lookers out of Moto, and now this gear from Acer. The Liquid's just now starting to make the rounds at retail, but the VP of its Asian handset biz says that it has "five or six" additional models on tap for early 2010 that'll run the gamut from low- to high-end. The third and fourth quarters, it seems, aren't yet firmed up -- so if you thought they were going to turn off the tap after that quick burst, you'd probably be wrong. Sadly, despite the well-stocked roadmap, there aren't any indications that the company is looking to expand outside of its Asian and European roots to include a North American presence -- but it's not any more shunning than we're accustomed to 'round these parts.

  • Chevy Volt to get iPhone, BlackBerry apps

Chevy Volt to get iPhone, BlackBerry apps

They may not let you actually drive the car James Bond-style, but it looks like there will be some apps for the iPhone and BlackBerry launching alongside the Chevy Volt, with apps for other devices apparently also a possibility. That word comes from Chevrolet's soon-to-be-retiring VP Brent Dewar, who unfortunately had little to say about the apps themselves, but did briefly flash the above slide during a presentation at the LA Auto Show last week. The apps will apparently let you control when the car charges, however, and even include integrated real-time features from OnStar, which should include things like electricity rates from utility companies by the time the Volt rolls out.

    [Thanks, Dave]

Apple Bans Another Developer, 1000+ Apps Pulled

As the old mantra goes, “Cheaters never prosper”. In this digital age, it may be time to revise that saying. Granted a veil of anonymity by the Internet, cheaters surely prosper from their cheating; it’s just that when they get caught, they go down hard. Alas, “Cheaters may temporarily prosper – but if they get [...]

Samsung dropping Symbian for Bada in 2010, says senior VP

Android is in, Windows Mobile is in (despite rumors to the contrary), and Bada is definitely in for next year, according to Samsung senior vice president Don Joo Lee. Not making the phone manufacturer's cut? Symbian. Digitimes has it from the exec that its new proprietary mobile OS will be taking the place of the Nokia-friendly platform. Hey, all the phones to end a legacy on, the Omnia HD certainly isn't a bad swan song.
