Microsoft gearing up to announce Windows Mobile 7 on February 15, project Pink moves forward

It's finally happening. Maybe. According to sources close to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is going to make a pretty big announcement at Mobile World Congress on February 15. After acknowledging that Windows Mobile isn't exactly where it should be in terms of development and progression, Microsoft appears to be ready to announce and unveil Windows Mobile 7. But what happened to WinMo 6.5.3?

  • Digital Storm Black|Ops certainly looks good

Digital Storm Black|Ops certainly looks good

What's the opinion on buying pre-built gaming PCs? I'm pretty sure there's a certain sense of pride that comes with building your own PC, but I also recognize that not everybody has all the time in the world to research motherboards, RAM timings, and all that jazz. Like, say, look at this PC. It's the Digital Storm Black|Ops (The irony of promoting a black op!), and A) it looks pretty damn cool B) it's sufficiently powerful to run Crysis on Damn High settings. I mean, I think so; Crysis is a mystery wrapped in an enigma hidden in a big box of cliches.

The killer app for Apple’s tablet: Gaming

This guest post is by Jeff Scott, founder and publisher of 148Apps, a blog providing fanatical coverage of everything iPhone and hopefully soon, the Apple tablet. While we still don’t know the name of the new tablet device; could be iPad, iTablet, iSlate, iCanvas, or an extension of the MacBook name. But what we do [...]

Video: HP has itself a Wall of Touch

What to make of HP's "Wall of Touch"? The Wall Street Journal has a nifty little write-up of the technology, and comes away like it just shook hands with Brock Lesnar's doctors. "Thank you so much, doctor!" The fact is, despite the fact that you don't actually touch the Wall of Touch, the idea of touchscreen interfaces is no longer foreign and exotic. We're several years after Jeff Han's big demonstration, plus there was that iPhone thing.

  • How many times do you have to be burned by BlackBerry to consider your options?

How many times do you have to be burned by BlackBerry to consider your options?

What's the phrase? Oh, yeah: Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. BlackBerry went down yesterday across North and South America. Users couldn't send or receive e-mail, and some complained that they couldn't connect to the Internet. It's the second time in a week that BlackBerry has failed. Considering how important the service is to some people—I dare you to go to Wall Street and not see everyone using the device—you really do wonder: how long will people tolerate this shoddy service? It also raises the related question of, How wise is it to rely on "the cloud" to host all of your important data? Surely you wouldn't leave "mission critical" information in the hands of someone else, someone who's unsettling opaque when it comes to explaining outages?

Sony Reader Daily Edition adds The New York Times, other newspapers to its back pocket

Should Santa leave a Sony Reader Daily Edition e-reader under your Christmas tree (or maybe you just like to buy fancy things on your own), you'll be pleased to know that you'll have a few more sources of content to choose from. Sony has agreed to deals bringing The New York Times, The Dallas Morning News, and The Baltimore Sun (among others) to the device. And there was much rejoicing. Presumably.

Florida gets its own Tesla dealership

I can see it now. Instead of putzing around in electric golf carts, retirees will soon be cruising in Tesla Roadsters. The car is essentially a gigantic and dramatically more powerful golf cart anyway. It's not like they need to worry about the 244 mile range. The bingo hall and golf course is probably right around the corner from their retirement compound anyway.

  • Nokia rumored to be eyeing Palm buy yet again

Nokia rumored to be eyeing Palm buy yet again

We've been around this rumor pretty much since Palm started looking competitive again, so take it for what you will -- but a bunch of fat cats down on Wall Street have been going ape today over renewed "chatter" that Nokia might be taking an interest in acquiring Palm. Palm's share prices are up well over 5 percent on the day, though we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if there was some behind-the-scenes manipulation going on here -- an acquisition would make less sense now than ever with suitors on the hook for $2 billion or more, a hefty sum even for a giant like Nokia, never mind the fact that they've still got two smartphone platforms of their own in the mix. Licensing webOS is being floated as a possible alternative to an outright Palm purchase -- but we're having such an exceedingly difficult time picturing a 5800 running webOS that we'll put this one on ice until we get the joint press release.

Nokia rumored to be eyeing Palm buy yet again originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 16:28:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Disney announces new DVD Killer technology

I love companies like Disney. They seem to think that just because they want something some way, it'll happen. Take for instance their latest scheme. Instead of allowing you to "buy" their movies on DVD, Blu-ray, or even VHS, they are going to allow you to buy access to their content.

Report: Wii video distribution service comes to North America in 2010

In Japan, Nintendo has been experimenting with offering content other than just games for quite a while now. Japanese DS owners have been able to download anime movies and digital manga for over a year. And in May this year, Nintendo teamed up with the world's biggest ad agency, Tokyo-based Dentsu, to introduce a video distribution service for the Wii. Needless to say, this service is Japan-only, too. But that will change soon.
