Walmart officially cuts iPhone 3GS to $97, potentially clearing out inventory for the iPhone 4?
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsWell, this is intriguing: Walmart just officially announced that it'll be selling the 16GB iPhone 3GS for $97 starting Tuesday, a full $100 off the regular price. Given the high probability that Steve Jobs will introduce the thoroughly-leaked next-gen iPhone when he gives the WWDC 2010 keynote on June 7th, the price cut seems like either an attempt to clear out remaining inventory or a way to slide the 3GS down the line to replace the $99 8GB iPhone 3G -- a move which would corroborate some whispers we've heard today that the 3G is no longer being shipped to stores. Either way, the 3GS just got a lot cheaper, which is never a bad thing, but we'd still say potential iPhone owners should wait a couple weeks and see what's coming next.

The Polaroid 300 brings back instant photo printing
Posted on April 29, 2010 | No Comments
Polaroid is back, baby. But don't run out to Walmart just yet. First I don't even know if Walmart is selling this kit, but if it was, you might want to pass. Living in the past isn't cheap. The Polaroid 300 carries a $90 MSRP with 10-shot film packs going for $10. That's a lot of cake.

The $65 Creation Tech netbook. You know it’s going to be great!
Posted on March 25, 2010 | No Comments
I'm not sure how useful this will be, but it sounds interesting. Chinese manufacturer Creation Tech is selling a 7 inch ultra mobile PC for $65. The specs aren't very impressive, but for that kind of money what do you expect?

Circuit City brick and mortar stores might live again
Posted on March 25, 2010 | No Comments
We all know the story: Circuit City Stores spiraled down from its high point in the late 90's to bankruptcy in 2008 and then liquidation in 2009. Systemax then bought the rights to the brand a few months later and quickly relaunched CircuitCity.com. Since then Systemax has been racking in the cash. So much cash in fact that Systemax is thinking about opening some Circuit City retail locations. Seriously.

What TiVo needs to do to make the Wall Street boys happy (and survive)
Posted on March 9, 2010 | No Comments
TiVo can't catch a break. The company just rolled out its next-gen platform and then finally ended a long court battle with Dish Network, causing its stock to surge to new heights. This all happened within the last two weeks. But then last night the company announced its sad Q4 2009 financials.
You already know the problem. TiVo is having a real tough time signing up new customers and retaining current ones as content providers keep pushing their low-price DVR options. The company only managed to net 46k new subscriptions in the last months of 2009, bringing the total headcount to roughly 2.6 million. That's down from the 4.36 million subs TiVo had in January 2006. TiVo ended up losing $10.2 million during the fourth quarter even though revenue improved 16% to $68.5 million.
It's sort of sad, actually. DVRs have lost their magic the last 10 years as cable companies offer cheap alternatives with smaller feature sets and none of the trademark TiVo charm. But TiVo can't die yet. I'm not ready to live in a TiVo-less world. The company must work on these three items in order to survive the next decade.

Most Blu-ray players are resting comfortably well north of the $100 mark, but not this Magnavox. It's only $78 and it really does play Blu-ray movies. However, there's a bunch that it can't do, because, well, it's only $78.

Denon’s S-5BD combines a BD player and 5.1 receiver for fun and profit
Posted on January 7, 2010 | No Comments
All-in-one solutions are nothing new. Hell, Walmart sells them, but that term is generally reserved for lower-market products, not something from a top-tier audio brands. Denon doesn't care about that stereotype though. The companies new S-5BD is a Blu-ray player and high-end audio receiver. All-in-one!

It's probably not a huge stretch to think that some people may very well be purchasing an Xbox 360 just to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Wal-Mart knows this and, as such, is offering a pretty enticing deal: Xbox 360 Arcade console, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and 12 months of Xbox Live Gold service for just $249.

Presenting a collection of Cyber Monday deals for your perusal
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No Comments
Today is Cyber Monday. It’s like Black Friday but with more indoorsiness. And while Black Friday is more of a brick-and-mortar, you’re-there-in-person type of thing, Cyber Monday is all online and there are far too many stores and deals to completely cover. Here’s a head start on some of the better deals from the bigger sites, though.

Droid Eris available for $30, shuns Black Friday theatrics
Posted on November 27, 2009 | No CommentsFrom everything we can tell, this new Droid Eris deal has nothing to do with the day after Thanksgiving and everything to do with the pure insanity of Walmart Wireless / LetsTalk.com. The same people that brought us the $30 Pixi have slashed the $99 Eris down to $30, which does wonders for removing the Eris from regular Droid comparisons. Judged purely on its own merits, $30 is a pretty smashing price for this handset, but in two years when that hefty Verizon contract is up it's probably going to seem even more outdated by new versions of Android and faster processors than it does now.
