iPhone 4: are you getting one?

Now that the dust is beginning to settle on Steve Jobs' WWDC10 keynote, we thought we'd ask the most pertinent question of all: who's buying this new hero mobile device from Apple? We know the company's loyal fan base will not disappoint, but what about you, undecided voter? Did that 960 x 640 IPS screen make you look upon Cupertino's wares with a new level of appreciation? And let us not neglect the iPhone's detractors here -- have they been placated by the inclusion of HD video recording, video chat and a meaty new A4 processor? Tick the appropriate box below, then visit us in the comments and let us know what you thought.

Global Verge wins $43 million lawsuit against mystery MVNO Zer01

Global Verge wins $43 million lawsuit against mystery MVNO Zer01
When we first heard about Zer01 it was set to launch at a time when other MVNOs were disappearing. (Remember Amp'd Mobile, or Helio?) Zer01 was pledging unlimited voice and data for just $69.99 a month, before most other carriers had their $99 plans, but ultimately never delivered a thing. Apparently Global Verge was similarly left in the dark, but unlike you or I it had invested $170,000 in Zer01 in exchange for selling wireless services as part of its multi-level marketing company. Global Verge had been allowing its "e-associates" (people who pay for the right to hawk Global Verge's wares) to shill for Zer01 wireless, which of course never delivered a single call. There are accusations flying fast and frantic about which of the two companies is the worst offender here, but the District Court in Clark County, Nevada at least believes that it's Zer01 reneging on its promises, awarding $43 million to Global Verge for breach of contract and various other legal wrongdoings. Congrats, GV, and good luck collecting.

Apple trademarks their retail stores and iDisk icon

Watch out, Joe’s Bait and Tackle, you better not have a big, open glass door with light wooden tables along the middle and light wooden shelves lining the walls on which you will display your wares, including, but not limited to laptops and computers. Apple has that entire color scheme and layout on lockdown, so [...]

Software piracy cost companies $51 billion last year

Got an interesting e-mail a few hours ago detailing software piracy loses from the year 2009, also known as "last year." The big, scary number is 51, as in $51 billion in loses. So says the Business Software Association. Reading the report, which is dripping with alarmist rhetoric, you'd think that Gaia herself were in danger. Don't worry, guys, we'll get through this.

  • Apple’s Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor could turn the iPhone into a new-age mood ring

Apple’s Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor could turn the iPhone into a new-age mood ring

Nike is making millions from its Apple-friendly wares, designed to turned technophiles into fitness freaks. Imagine the possibilities if the iPhone could not only track your running stride but also monitor your heart rate while doing it. That's one of a suite of potential uses for this patent app from Apple, a Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor. The design is for a series of electrodes that are, well, seamlessly embedded into the shell of a given device in such a way that they are "not visibly or haptically distinguishable on the device." The device could then, with a touch, measure heart-rate, uniquely identify a user, and even "determine the user's mood from the cardiac signals." Just imagine the new flood of EKG-related apps: iPalpitate, Murmur Maker, Cardiac Arrest... the possibilities are endless.

    [Thanks, Staska]

If you're already up and running on webOS 1.4.1.1, it's time to lay off of the Update button for a while. Palm just sent out an alert to developers detailing their plans for the next minor update -- and as long as our math isn't failing us, the dates work out to somewhere at the end of May or the beginning of June.

  • Longines opens their first online store

Longines opens their first online store

The world of fine watches is a benighted place. Strange hang-ups masquerading as tradition are the norm and historically watch companies have looked at every new improvement to their business with trepidation. Consider the quartz movement, for example. Texas Instruments approached a number of Swiss companies when they first created the miniaturized quartz watch but no one wanted it - it was beneath them. China and Japan, however, bought the movements by the truckload and ate old horology's lunch. For years, watch companies have only allowed their wares to be sold through authorized dealers. This meant you had to go into a frou-frou shop, get talked down to by a snooty salesperson, and then pay over retail for a watch that was worth, in terms of parts and materials, about half of its sticker price. Pretty nice scam, huh? The Internet came along and those authorized dealers hit on a nice scam. They'd "sell" their watches to real people - shills, usually - and those real people would resell them online. Swatch Group, for example, is currently fighting this grey market in the Supreme Court. However, another part of the Swatch Group, Longines, is taking to the Internet like a duck to duck sauce.

Zune HD hacked, entire hardware open to homebrew programmers

Potentially huge news for Zune HD owners—that means Devin and I. It has been hacked~! Yes, the good folks over at ZuneBoards have hacked the Zune HD to pieces, giving homebrew developers full access to the hardware, access that otherwise lay behind the XNA development kit. The Zune HD isn't too shabby, so I fully expect to see ports of popular emulators like FCEUX in no time at all.

    iPadDownloads.com on ebay for $1,000,000

Just think how much iPadDownload.com would go for if the iPad was an open device that allowed 3rd party downloads? $1 million would be the opening bid. But because you really can't actually download anything directly to the iPad outside of the App Store and iTune's gated community, iPadDownload.com will probably end up being some malicious wares site that will rake in more cash in a week than most of us will ever see over our lifetimes.

Best Buy now hawking Viliv’s wares

Viliv makes some hot, little portables. That's a fact. The X70 and S5 touchscreen along with the S7 convertible netbook are among the best in their respective niche markets. But previously the products were only available from online retailers, which of course limits their visibility from a whole segment of potential customers. Starting Monday though, Best Buy shoppers will be able to pick up the products in store and online. There will even be an instant rebate available on the none-3G modem-equipped models.

  • Paying the Amazon tax

    Paying the Amazon tax

Yay, taxes! It looks like more and more states are considering forcing the likes of Amazon and Overstock.com (note: I've never bought anything from there!) to pay taxes. This is good and bad: it helps, however little, state governments balance the books, but it also raises the cost of "doing business" in those states. It also makes it more expensive to buy things online. Boo!
