Wii Controller Demo gets active, Android and Wiimote handle Donkey Kong on video

We knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as "Wii Controller IME") was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn't expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we're kvetching or anything -- and in fact, we'd argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin' Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Video: How good is the Nintendo Wii emulator Dolphin? Let’s see how Resident Evil 4 does!

So a few days ago Dolphin 2.0 was released. Dolphin is a Nintendo Wii and GameCube emulator for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it works quite well. How well? Here’s a video of me playing the Wii version of Resident Evil 4—which, yes, I do own, thank you very much. Yes, the CG intro plays twice, [...]

    Virtual guitar pedalboard interface

If you have a friend who is a “serious” guitarist, you probably know how they love to show off their pedal collection. A dizzying array of brightly colored metal housings that more often than not, they don’t know exactly how they all work. Dave Verlee from the University of Illinois has cooked up a really [...]

Puyocon: Ball-shaped, squeezable input interface (videos)

The Puyocon wants to be for PCs what the Wiimote became for game consoles: An alternative input interface that doesn't require pressing buttons but arm movements from users in order to control what's going on on the screen. The small device is the brainchild of the so-called Entertainment Computing Laboratory [JP] at Japan's Tsukuba University. The Puyocon is a ball-shaped, soft and wireless controller that users can roll, throw, squeeze or move with both hands in order to trigger an action on the screen (for example, moving a cursor around). It features a total of 14 pressure sensors, a three-way acceleration sensor and Bluetooth.

  • Best of CES 2010

    Best of CES 2010

CES is over for CrunchGear (we'll still be posting some stragglers today and tomorrw) but we'd like to reflect on the best gear we saw at the show. These few days flew by and even with the glut of 3D TVs and ereaders we were actually impressed by a few small, good things that caught our eye on the show floor. Here are the winners of CrunchGear's Best of CES 2010 informal editor poll.

    Review: Nyko Wand Action Pak

Although only a few Wii games support the light gun interface, if you're a heavy player you may want to look into getting the $39.99 Wand Action Pack if you're planning on adding a controller to your line-up. This kit includes Nyko's Wand Wiimote - essentially an exact clone of Nintendo's product - along with a sleeve and gun attachment for light gun games.

Touchable Holography: New projector lets you “touch” 3D objects with your hands (video)

Here's some more info on a Sci-Fi dream come true: As if looking at floating images in free space produced by mid-air displays isn't cool enough, a research team from the University of Tokyo now makes it possible to even touch (kind of) those images with a newly developed projector system. The so-called Touch Holography is essentially made of three parts: Provision Interactive Technologies' Holo display, two Wii remote controls to track your hands in front of the display and a tactile display that uses ultrasound to provide tactile sensation onto your hand.

  • Review: Klonoa for the Wii

    Review: Klonoa for the Wii

To say that Namco’s Klonoa is a throwback would be an understatement. Sure, we first saw Klonoa in 1997 for the PlayStation, but the remake for the Wii is more than just a reboot. It’s a throwback to the golden age of gaming circa 1985. It reminds me of classic side scrolling action that’s since been supplanted by 3D shooters and other abominations that I find myself mildly addicted to. And, no, it’s not a game for kids. In fact, Klonoa gets to an absurd level of difficulty that it makes me want to throw the remote at the TV and stomp out of the room knocking everything down in my path. In other words, I love it and hate it all the same.

  • Review: Let’s Tap for the Wii

Review: Let’s Tap for the Wii

“So, I’m supposed to put my Wiimote on a box and bang on that to play Let’s Tap?” Yeah, that’s pretty much what I kept asking myself while I unwrapped Sega’s Let’s Tap for the Wii. By placing the Wii Remote on a box and tapping the surface, the Wiimote’s accelerometer miraculously picks up on the vibrations and translates them on-screen. It’s a novel idea, sure, and I’m astonished that it actually works. I’ve finally replaced Wii Sports as my party game when friends are over and the girls are sick of the boys shooting aliens all night drunk on Pabst.

Play Lebowski@Home With Wii Bowling Ball

This is the Wii accessory Homer would buy Marge for her birthday. The “Bowling Ball for Wii” is supposedly an “ultra-realistic” ball for the many bowling games for the console. Three holes in back provide a place to grip, just like a real ball, and there are buttons on the other side to take care [...]

Gesture Controlled Mouse Makes its Retail Debut

Nintendo’s Wiimote has been a big hit. Now a new mouse from HillCrest Labs uses similar motion-sensing technology to let users control an on-screen cursor with the flick of their wrist. The bangle-shaped mouse called the Loop Pointer is designed for use by consumers who connect their PC or Mac to a TV, says the company. Through [...]

Yet another pic of the black Wii

Japan is getting a black Wii. You jealous? The first press shots weren’t that impressive, but this glamour shot showing the Wii, classic controller, and Wiimote sure does make the system seem enticing. Too bad that the black option is only available in Japan for the time being. Also, why the hell is the small TV [...]
