China will soon count more mobile Web users than there are people in the US

Not an easy thing to conceptualize indeed, but according to eMarketer there will be more mobile Internet users in China than the entire population of the US by the end of this year.
For your reference, the 2010 estimate of the size of the United States population stands at roughly 310 million people according to Wikipedia, so that's a shitload of people browsing the Web from their phones right there.
The report, which you can purchase here, also says the number of mobile Internet users in China will grow fast to reach a staggering 957 million by 2014.

Today in history: the flight data recorder

It's not entirely clear to me that March 17 is the actual birthday of the so-called "Black Box", but who am I to argue with Wired's This Day in Tech? According to them, the idea for the flight data recorder was born in 1953 by an Australian named David Warren. The first prototype was complete in 1957, and within a couple of years became a standard feature on all commercial airplanes.

.canon: Canon wants to establish its own top-level domain

Megalomania or genius marketing move? Canon seriously takes aim at becoming the world's first company with its own generic top-level domain (gTLD), namely ".canon". The new domain would join the likes of .com, .edu, .gov, .org, etc. (Wikipedia has the full list). The Japanese electronics giant announced [press release in English] its plan to acquire the rights for the domain from ICANN today.

$2.2 billion liabilities: Japan’s wireless carrier Willcom files for bankruptcy

Wikipedia has a pretty useful list of countries by number of mobile phones in use, which shows that Japan (with around 100 million users) is the No. 7 in the world. The market is largely controlled by mobile carriers NTT Docomo, KDDI au and SoftBank Mobile but seemed big enough to offer enough room for a number of smaller competitors, too.
Yesterday, however, a company called Willcom (one of said smaller players) announced it had to file for bankruptcy. The reason: With just $54 million in capital, Willcom managed to amass a whopping $2.2 billion in liabilities. It's the biggest bankruptcy ever in Japan's hyper-competitive mobile industry.

Here's the thing, my father-in-law is a hard-working UPS driver. He defines blue-collar. After a long day driving around in a brown truck and wearing a brown jumpsuit in the freezing Michigan winter, he wants nothing more than to come home and enjoy a random sports game -- sometimes live, sometimes a re-broadcast. But the damn TV guide keeps ruining the fun for him. Look at that pic and tell me what's wrong.
