Video: a fresh look at Windows Phone 7

Microsoft held a little gathering in New York City last night, where they showed off the progress being made in Windows Phone 7. The big upshot of this is that Into Mobile were there to capture a video of some demo-time with the new OS. It's the first video I've seen of the OS running on real (albeit pre-production) hardware, and it gives you a good idea of the feel that Microsoft were going for with their new UI. I've been a fan of the UI since I first saw it, and I really like the fluid feel and the gorgeous transitions (which are, to me, the highlight of the video).

Video: HTC HD2 gets Windows Phone 7, but not by Microsoft or HTC’s doing

The second Microsoft announced Windows Phone 7 last month, the same question began pouring in en masse: “Will this run on my current Windows Mobile 6.5 device?” Microsoft was quick to crush everyone’s hopes , saying that no WinMo 6.5 devices were up to snuff. “But what about the HD2? That things like brand new [...]

Copy and paste coming to Windows Phone 7 later down the road?

Microsoft has taken a very Apple-esque approach to the development and launch of Windows Phone 7. Now, before anyone tears into me in the comments with some crazy knee-jerk response, think about it for a second. Developed in the utmost of secrecy? Check. Closed-wall app store? Check. Minimalist user interface? Check. Apple also has a [...]

Windows update causes Windows XP to freak out

Microsoft makes it so hard to like Windows. The company released an update on Tuesday that seems to have borked a number of Windows XP installations. There's a number of message board threads wherein people are complaining that, since the update, their computers boot right to a blue screen of death. Sigh.

Microsoft leaks a screenshot of Windows Mobile… something

    Filed under:

Microsoft's been pretty cagey with the future of Windows Mobile so far, but apparently the Office Mobile 2010 team just doesn't care -- in addition to leaking a new interface in that confidential slide deck last month, they've now included this screen shot on the Office Mobile 2010 beta website. Here's what's wild: this design language completely matches the first set of Windows Mobile 7 leaks we saw nearly two years ago, so either Microsoft hasn't made any changes in that time, or what we're seeing here is something else entirely. Combine that with rumors that WinMo 7 isn't due to hit until the end of next year, and we're starting to think there's something bigger afoot here -- the only other alternative is that Microsoft has waited nearly three years to launch what's little more than a refresh of its current interface, and even Redmond can't be that slow to execute... can it?

Windows Marketplace now available for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1

Long before Windows Marketplace launched on Windows Mobile 6.5 as Microsoft's answer to the App-Store-Craze, we knew it would be extended down into Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 - the only question was "When?. The answer, it seems, is today. Microsoft has just announced that the Marketplace is available to 6.0 and 6.1 users beginning immediately.

The new Windows 7 commercials: Now we’re tawkin’

Windows 7 is your idea, friends. That's what this new spot - along with some 7 second demos after the jump - is trying to say. It's basically pointing out that Windows 7 is a nice, clean update. Yes, I would agree it's a Vista Service Pack and, in a way, it's kind of like Snow Leopard in that it changes little in the UI but improves quite a bit under the hood. But Windows 7 is Microsoft's big product for 2010 so let's let them have their day in the sun.

Dev finds Windows Marketplace DRM severely lacking, easily circumventable

Microsoft's Windows Phones just left the chute a few days ago, and already it seems that ye old DRM is getting talked about -- and not in a good way. According to one Chainfire over at XDA-Developers, the so-called "copy protection" involved in keeping applications in place rather than strewn across a neighborhood of handsets is a pitiful joke, requiring just five minutes of tinkering to save the CAB files that the Marketplace app downloads to a separate folder. In other words, that relocated CAB file could be distributed to all of your friends, turning a single purchase into freeware for as many people as you know (or don't know, even). So, Marketplace devs -- does that make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, or what?

  • Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer On “Moving The Needle”

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer On “Moving The Needle”

Last week we showed the highlights and 10+ minutes of video footage of an exclusive hour-long TechCrunch interview with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Now for the rest of that interview. The video was just a teaser. I spoke with Ballmer for another 50 minutes on the record, doing a deeper dive into five key areas of Microsoft’s product strategy: Big Opportunities, Operating Systems/Browsers, Mobile, Search and Developers. This post is about big opportunities at Microsoft beyond their dual cash cows of Windows and Office. Microsoft generates around $20 billion a year in pre-tax profit, and spends nearly $10 billion on research and development. When Microsoft thinks about increasing (or sustaining) those profits, they have to think big. And they have to think long term. Ballmer says he thinks about new business opportunities in three buckets: expanding current businesses (short run), building things from scratch (long run), and big aquisitions (short cuts).
