Note to all Acer easyStore H340 WHS owners
Posted on December 5, 2009 | No Comments
Own a Acer easyStore H340 Windows Home Server? Don't be like me and spend countless hours trying to figure out why the hell the box keeps randomly shutting off. I spent the last two nights running spy sweepers and virus scans, pulling hard drives and swapping memory in search of a solution.I'm better than that.
What I should have done first is ask Google. She (that's right, I picture Google as a smart, but seductive, oracle) has all the answers as long as I know what to ask.

Good news. The WHS Power Pack 3 will be here shortly and packs a whole bunch of enhancements aimed at Windows 7. The beta has been available for the last couple of months, but this is the official release and will install automagicly if Automatic Updates are enabled on November 24.

Windows 7 exploit (the first?) confirmed by Microsoft
Posted on November 16, 2009 | No CommentsWindows 7 users would be well-advised to block outgoing ports 139 and 445. Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a vulnerability that affects SMB in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 RC2. Worst case scenario: you connect to a malicious server then it crashes your PC.

Contest: HP MediaSmart Server EX495
Posted on November 6, 2009 | No CommentsThis is nice. HP is letting me give away a brand new EX495 MediaSmart Sever to go along with my review. To win the 1.5TB Windows Home Server server, you’re going to have to play a little game. Don’t worry, it’s easy. No scavenger hunt this time. All you need to do is guess the total [...] -
Microsoft giving away Windows Server 2008
Posted on October 20, 2009 | No Comments
Well, they're not just giving it away to everybody. Microsoft is giving away copies of the Server 2008 R2 standard edition as part of their DreamSpark program. DreamSpark is Microsoft's initiative to give away some of their most powerful tools to students, allowing them to learn how to use the products for free (instead of just pirating a copy off the web).

Host a Wordpress site on your Windows Home Server (soon)
Posted on October 2, 2009 | No CommentsEveryone loves Wordpress and everyone loves Windows Home Server. Using Wordpress to host a site on your WHS just makes sense! But don’t go looking for the download link just yet, it doesn’t seem the add-in is available yet, but I like the possibilities it holds. With the add-on you’ll soon be able to quickly and [...] -
Microsoft Buys Interactive Supercomputing, Kills Its Product Line
Posted on September 22, 2009 | No Comments
peHUB yesterday caught wind of Microsoft’s supposed acquisition of Interactive Supercomputing, a company specialized in bringing the power of parallel computing to desktops, but was declined an official comment to the news following a request for confirmation. Redmond has this morning officially announced the acquisition by means of a blog post on the Windows Server Division Weblog and an information website, detailing that it has picked up the technology assets of ISC and that the latter’s employees – including CEO Bill Blake – will be joining the Microsoft team at the New England Research & Development Center in Cambridge, MA.
Microsoft says it will not continue developing Star-P (ISC’s flagship product) beyond version 2.8 which was released earlier this year, and that version 2.9 that was released to a few customers in Beta will not be released for production use by customers. Active Star-P customers who are using earlier versions of Star P were granted the right to upgrade to 2.8 by ISC prior to the close of the transaction. Microsoft did not acquire the customer contracts between ISC and their customers but says it will provide technical support to active customers through the longer of their existing support contracts or 12/31/2010.

Microsoft hatin’ on Linux, now at Best Buy!
Posted on September 8, 2009 | No Comments
Microsoft, will you stop at nothing to protect your hegemony? Your "Linux Facts" campaign from a couple years ago was poorly executed, and trumped up a bunch of selective information to make Windows look better than Linux. You killed that, and replaced it with a Windows Server "compare" site, but it's still a bunch of selective data points that don't tell the whole story. Now, you're even trying to get the sales drones at Best Buy to steer folks away from Linux!

How to enable Time Machine backups to a Windows Home Server
Posted on July 10, 2009 | No Comments
Well, the one big advantage HP had in the Windows Home Server game maybe about to disappear. Someone has found a relatively easy way to enable remote Time Machine backup to a WHS. It's probably only a matter of time before a rough GUI version appear followed up shortly later by a well-polished solution.

CrunchDeals: 50% off the HP MediaSmart LX195
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No Comments
I liked everything about the HP MediaSmart LX195 Windows Home Server except the price. It's fast and quiet. The software suite is extensive and even includes compatablility to OS X's Time Machine. But the $399 MSRP is totally not worth it for only 640GB. Thankfully HP has a deal on the server right now.

CrunchDeals: HP LX195 for $375 with a free 1TB external HDD
Posted on June 19, 2009 | No Comments
The only beef I have with the HP LX195 is the price for the amount of storage. Newegg must have heard my cries as the retailer is now throwing in an Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB USB external hard drive. That means, you can get 1.67 TB of storage in a Windows Home Server for only $375. Now that's a deal, but you better hurry as it ends on 6/25/09.
Don't forget that we are giving away one of these servers in our recent review. Just leave a comment in this post to be entered.

Windows Home Server + Humidor = Home Servidor
Posted on June 5, 2009 | No Comments
Who doesn't want a working cigar humidor that also has a Windows Home Server with 2TB of storage? No one. Mainly because everyone's smoking room also doubles as their server room. After all, cigar smoke and computers are meant to hang in the same crowd.

First look: Acer easyStore H340
Posted on May 27, 2009 | No Comments
We just took delivery of Acer's first Windows Home Server, the Acer easyStore H340. So far, so good. The machine is heavy and well made. It feels just as good as HP's EX series. I am thinking that HP's might have better cooling with a Mac Pro-type front, but we'll run some tests and see if temperature is even an issue with the Acer. Hopefully this machine preforms as well as it looks.
If it does, HP has a problem as this 1TB WHS is only $399 verses the $647 post rebate price for its EX487 1.5TB model. That's a big difference and it doesn't matter how much extra software HP is loading on it. Price and storage is the most important selling points on these servers.
Anyway, click through for a gallery of unboxing pics.
