Posted on March 3, 2010 | No CommentsI think I'm getting to the point that, instead of feeling bad for people who fall victim to phishing scheme, or any other online nonsense, I'm actually like, “You know what? Serves you right.” There's a new scam going around that exploits Internet Explorer (in Windows XP, mostly), and it works by tricking users into pressing the F1 key at a certain time. Once the key is pressed, any ol' code a hackers wants to execute can be executed. Right now, the only work-around is to not press F1 when prompted by any ol' site. Cool.

Japan gets slew of new USB 3.0 external HDDs

Computer equipment maker Buffalo is pretty bullish about USB 3.0. The company today announced a total of five new USB 3.0 HDDs for the Japanese market, namely two "compact models" [JP] (81×130×16mm) and three bigger (45×175×156mm) devices [JP]. The HD-PEU3-BK (pictured above), the compact type, will be available in a version that holds 500 GB (price: $200) and another one with 640GB ($250).

USB 3.0 is poised to become mainstream soon, and more and more compatible devices have been cropping up in the last few months. Today computer equipment maker Buffalo in Japan has announced [JP] what it claims to be the world's first 4-port USB 3.0. This comes five weeks after VIA (based out of Taiwan) has unveiled the first USB 3.0 hub controller in the industry.

Windows update causes Windows XP to freak out

There's a number of message board threads wherein people are complaining that, since the update, their computers boot right to a blue screen of death. Sigh.

Its only been around 8 months since the xpPhone -- a phone which, as the name implies, runs Windows XP -- made its online debut, but its already caused quite the rift between the mega-geeks. One camp seems to think its the coolest thing since air-conditioned underpants; the other seems to think it's a big pile of nonsense.

Just look at their spy button camera, the USB necktie with a built-in camera and the camera watch they developed in the last few months. Last July, Thanko started offering a a pen with an integrated micro camera. And today the company announced [JP] the so-called Super Slim Video Pen 2, which is a spy pen that shoots video in HD (1,280x960 at 30fps, to be more exact).
