Posted on June 18, 2010 | No CommentsHow would we like to replace the UI on our Windows Mobile 6.5 phone with the Kin UI? Well, we never really thought about it, we suppose... and frankly, we're not sure why anyone else did, either. Alas, KinLauncher is here, delivering a pretty authentic Kin-esque home screen but not much else -- as soon as you touch anything, you'll be dumped back into the cold comfort of WinMo (or Sense, as the case may be). It's available for download, if you're really into that sort of thing -- but if you'd rather enjoy the carnage from a safe distance, there's a video after the break.

Microsoft outs Windows Embedded Handheld platform, Motorola ES400 is the first to get it
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsThroughout the course of Windows Phone 7's paced, deliberate unveiling this year, Microsoft has been very clear on the fact that it doesn't intend for Windows Mobile -- the legacy platform we know today -- to disappear, arguing that it's got several years of life left in it for certain verticals. We're starting to see that philosophy play out today with the introduction of Windows Embedded Handheld, which is essentially a warmed-over version of WinMo 6.5.3 with some key UI and enterprise-focused enhancements. Microsoft is specifically calling out an "extended support life-cycle" for the platform, a sign that these phones aren't for the gotta-have-it crowd -- instead, the company intends to push these things through corporate fleets where Windows Mobile has traditionally dominated, places where Windows Phone's flashy stylings and locked-down underpinnings won't have the same draw.
To that end, Motorola has announced the ES400 as Windows Embedded Handheld's inaugural device, a rugged smartphone with a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7627 core, resistive VGA touchscreen, fingerprint scanner, and a trick 3.5G radio that can be user-switched between GSM and CDMA. Naturally, you're not going to see this on carrier shelves, but the ES400 is being pushed as a solid option for field sales and service, healthcare, and retail use -- so if you're working in any of those fields, you might have a harder time shaking off the last remnants of WinMo than you ever imagined. Sony Ericsson rearing a ‘Julie’ Windows Phone 7 slider in the lab?

Our latest Windows Phone 7 gossip stems from the juicy Chinese grapevine. Rumor has it that Sony Ericsson's now testing a WP7 device -- possibly a first for the company -- codenamed "Julie," which sports a sliding QWERTY keyboard and a capacitive multitouch screen about the size of the X10's. Ah, this sure brings back touching memories of the first two WinMo Xperia sliders. Apart from the processor being clocked at 1GHz or above, little else is known about this unborn baby -- no dates, no photos ('tis our mockup on the right), but we won't question this tipster who also brought us SE's "Shakira" and the peculiar 5.5-inch Android device. Turning the excitement up to 11, Samsung announces *two* new WinMo 6.5 phones

I know I said yesterday that it would be hard to get excited over a WinMo 6.5 powered follow up to the Omnia, but Samsung today dropped a bombshell on us. No, not a WinPho 7 Omnia, two new WinMo 6.5 phones: the Omnia Pro 4 and 5!
Using mathemagics, scientists have proven that news of two half-interesting phones actually equals the news of one interesting phone.
But I can't say that I'm moved by Samsung's announcement.

Never, ever doubt the skill and determination of the guys over at xda-developers, capable of cracking any device and bringing you fresh ROMs to brighten up your stuffy gadgets. This latest bit of wunder-code isn't a full new image, rather a tiny WinMo app that does something magical: enables multitouch on single-touch resistive screens. How? Sadly developer OndraSter isn't saying just yet, but it relies on leaving one finger in place and moving the other, so perhaps it detects a jump in touch position and treats it as a pinch gesture. In the videos below it's shown working in Opera, but should work anywhere, and while the developer filmed these on an HTC Touch Pro 2 he says this will work on just about any WinMo 6 or 6.1 device. The app has sadly not been released to the wild just yet, but we hope OndraSter drops some binaries soon before he starts a riot among Windows Mobile users with more than one finger.

NTT DoCoMo, KDDI launch their endless Summer 2010 collections
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsSurprise: Japanese carriers are announcing literally dozens of phones at once. Okay, look, that's not a surprise at all, but bear with us, because there are a few shining jewels in here amongst the seemingly endless array of WVGA displays and one-seg tuners from NTT DoCoMo and KDDI au, both of whom have announced their Summer 2010 collections of handsets this week. Of note, two of the models from DoCoMo -- the Fujitsu F-06B and Sharp SH-07B are capable of shooting 1080p video, while KDDI's SH008 from Sharp, S003 from Sony Ericsson, and CA005 from Casio all feature sensors of 12 megapixels or larger. Several of the devices can also be used as WiFi hotspots, and Hitachi's trick Beskey for KDDI has interchangeable keypads that change the shape of the keys, not the layout -- a bit superficial, perhaps, but we're all about choice. DoCoMo is also launching a handful of smartphones: the Lynx SH-10B from Sharp (not to be confused with the old Atari handheld of the same name) that features Android atop a 5-inch touchscreen, Toshiba's 4.1-inch T-01B Dynapocket with WinMo, and RIM's plain old BlackBerry Bold 9700. Don't get us wrong, it's still quite a haul, but we can't help but feel that the gap between Japan's wireless scene and the rest of the world is closing fast.

Bing app for WinMo 6.x phones adds turn-by-turn navigation
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsTurns out Google isn't the only one pushing further into the turn-by-turn market this week -- Microsoft came out swinging today with the announcement that full car navigation capability has been added to the latest version of its Bing app for Windows Mobile 6.x devices, too. It's got the usual array of route configuration options for avoiding traffic and tolls, alerts, direction lists, and voice prompts -- and Microsoft describes the audible directions as an "amazingly lifelike voice experience," so our expectations are set appropriately. Interestingly, the app isn't available to Verizon subscribers for some ominous reason, but folks using a laundry list of devices on Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T can update their already-installed Bing app or visit Bing's site for the download.

For Windows Phone 7, Only The Best Is Good Enough

Feeling a bit disappointed with the recent(ish) announcement of the feature-reduced, locked-down OS that is Windows Phone 7? Despite valid arguments for the change, it does feel a bit like moving back in with your parents after finishing college: sure it's a nice house, but what's with all the rules?
However, a recent interview (in Dutch) with Charlie Kindel during the Dutch DevDay event says that while the first release of WinPho 7 may be a little "lacking" initially, missing features will be added in the future... but only when they're perfect.

Wowza. Consider me impressed. It took Microsoft 3 years to develop Windows Phone 7 Series -- but its only taken 2 weeks for some far-too-talented dabbler to recreate the look and feel of the new OS as a skin for older Windows Mobile handsets, relying on nothing but screenshots and demo videos.
Get ready for tons of fake Windows Phone 7 videos and people saying "No! Seriously! I swear my buddy has Windows Phone 7 on his 3 year old WinMo handset!".

HTC Russia says HD2 will get Windows Mobile 7 upgrade, but other ‘communicators’ won’t

HTC's Russian contingent has been rather forthcoming with its Windows Mobile 7 plans this morning, which will please HD2 owners but disappoint many others. The good news is that HTC's flagship WinMo handset is assured of getting Microsoft's finest when it comes out, but the bad news is that the rest of the line will remain stuck at version 6.5 or below. Philips rolls into China with WinMo 6.5 via D908 slate
Posted on December 29, 2009 | No CommentsPhilips has imbued its power-sipping Xenium line with some reasonably attractive industrial design in the past, so we're not too sure what they're thinking with this latest D908 here; granted, it's apparently got WinMo 6.5 on board, but that's no excuse -- goodness knows there are plenty of beautiful devices on the market these days with Microsoft guts. The upshot, though, is that this has EV-DO with an eye on a Chinese launch, a surefire sign that it'll be coming to China Telecom. Other features include a WVGA display, 5 megapixel cam, 2GB of onboard storage with microSD expansion up to 32GB, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, and an integrated FM radio. Just figure out how to slip this into a case 3 or 4mm thinner than the D908's beefy 14.5mm, Philips, and you've got a winner on your hands.

Verizon Samsung Omnia II impressions
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsWhen the Omnia II first appeared on our radar, two things caught our attention: TouchWiz 2.0 and Windows Mobile 6.5. To be honest, neither of these items really piqued our interest: we knew what to expect from WinMo and had serious reservations about Samsung's latest and greatest UI. That said, we were more than willing to suspend judgement until we saw her in action. With bullet points that include a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 800MHz processor, and 8GB storage (before you even get to your microSD card), one could honestly hold out hope for a pretty decent product. Did the handset make for a satisfying, well-rounded smartphone? Or did it just find new ways of repeating the same old errors? You'll have to read on to find out.
