Telefonica gets behind MeeGo, says ’smartphones, netbooks, tablets, and internet connected TVs’ are possibilities

Virtually all of the MeeGo buzz since Intel and Nokia's tie-up back in February has been focused on high-end smartphones, tablets, and netbooks, but Telefonica reminds us that there's another potential target for the platform, too -- connected TVs. The Spanish wireless, fixed internet, and cable operator has thrown its weight behind MeeGo this week (which is a pretty big deal considering that the company has global reach across 25 countries and about a quarter billion subscribers), hinting that "services could potentially include content and applications that can be accessed from devices such as smartphones, netbooks, tablets, and internet connected TVs for Telefonica's wireline and wireless operations." Allegro portable internet radio features smart battery recharging

The Grace Allegro Wi-Fi internet radio costs $170 and supports streaming of over 16,000 radio stations, Pandora, Sirius, Live365, and MP3tunes. It can run for around eight hours on six AA batteries and the device can detect whether standard batteries or rechargeable NiMH batteries have been inserted and then recharge as needed.

We have Internet access in planes now (Virgin America offers it in the US, for example), so why not on boats? That's what one of Japan's biggest telecommunications companies, KDDI, thought and now gives us a device that will allow ship passengers to enjoy wireless broadband Internet while being out on the water.

How should Net Neutrality affect the mobile Internet?
Posted on September 22, 2009 | No CommentsThe Big Deal yesterday was the FCC's announcement of two additional proposals to its enforcement of Net Neutrality: non-discrimination (ISPs can't play favorites when it comes to network traffic), and transparent management (ISPs should be upfront with their network management practices, like blocking BitTorrent during peak hours). That's all well and good—I don't think you'll find anyone across the Crunch Network who doesn't support Net Neutrality—but this is thought to apply to “traditional” ISPs: Comcast, Time Warner, etc. The question becomes, then,how should Net Neutrality affect the wireless Internet? Should AT&T be subjected to the same regulations that Time Warner is vis-à-vis the iPhone? What about Sprint and the Palm Pre (and Pixi!)?
