Delightful rumor: Verizon Wireless testing the iPad on its network

Oh my heavens. Someone close to someone else says that Verizon Wireless is testing the iPad on its network. Does that mean we could be looking at an iPad that works with Verizon Wireless? And would that mean an iPhone is far behind?

  • What type of phone should a George Costanza buy?

What type of phone should a George Costanza buy?

As luck would have it, I'll be in the market for a brand-new phone in the coming weeks. Terribly exciting, yes. But there's a bit of a problem: the two "biggest" phones out there, the iPhone and all those Android-based ones, rub me the wrong way. Longtime readers will know that I'm fairly neurotic, sorta like George Costanza from Seinfeld. Does the phrase Jerkstore mean anything to you? That's 100 percent me. So what's a person to do when, for reasons I'll describe, he wants nothing to do with Apple or Google phones?

  • Termination fees for Nexus One come from both Google and T-Mobile

Termination fees for Nexus One come from both Google and T-Mobile

Screen-shot-2010-01-11-at-January-11-10.05.44-AM[1] Prepare the foot soldiers from the Internet Nerd Rage army for this one. Apparently if you buy a subsidized Google Nexus One and “cancel your wireless plan prior to 120 days of continuous wireless service,” you’ll be charged the difference between what you paid for the device and its full retail price of $529. So at its current subsidized price of $179, you’d pay a $350 early termination fee. That fee is paid to Google, by the way, “and is in addition to any early termination fees that may be charged by your chosen carrier.”

  • Should we sue cellphone companies over car accidents caused by distracted drivers?

Should we sue cellphone companies over car accidents caused by distracted drivers?

You knew this was coming. Someone's driving a car. They're talking on their cellphone, too. The car crashes. It crashes into another car. The driver of the other car dies. And now the family of the killed driver wants to sue someone. That “someone” just so happens to be the wireless provider and the manufacturer of the phone.

  • Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 heading to AT&T?

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 heading to AT&T?

Man, the loot you can uncover when you go snooping around spec pages. That most ambitious of Sony Ericsson projects, the XPERIA X10, is still a long way from being released, but already we can narrow down the list of potential US carriers to just one: AT&T. The guys over at Phandroid were the first to spot the newly added UMTS frequency specs for the phone, and the available 800/850/1900/2100 bands fit only AT&T's 3G network. That's gonna be a bitter pill to swallow if you were looking for something like (or better than) an iPhone, but were put off by the wireless provider. Then again, with pre-order prices for unlocked X10s showing up at $999 in some places, maybe you can just look at our lukewarm hands-on and convince yourself this phone ain't worth it anyway. Go on, you know denial makes sense.

    [Thanks, Berto]

iPhone no longer exclusive to O2 in the UK, heads to Orange ‘later this year’

Some pretty big iPhone news to share with y'all this morning: the iPhone will no longer be exclusive to O2 over in the UK, becoming available on Orange “later this year.” So for all of you in the U.S. who one day hope to see the iPhone on a different wireless provider (like, say, Verizon Wireless, differences between CDMA and GSM notwithstanding), well, you now have a precedent.
