HTC EVO 4G getting over-the-air update next week?
Posted on June 24, 2010 | No CommentsWord on the street is that Sprint and HTC are hard at work on a software update for the EVO 4G that would start rolling out on the 28th, next Monday. If true, this would be the phone's second update overall -- the first was pushed in concert with the launch in order to fix microSD issues -- and like the first, this one is designed to squash bugs, it seems. We're told this one will "enhance" WiFi (whether that means 802.11n will be enabled, we're not sure), fix some Exchange issues, and improve battery life, all of which would be welcome improvements. Of course, a Froyo update would be even more welcome, but we're just going to have to keep our expectations in check here for the time being.HTC EVO 4G getting over-the-air update next week? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:41:00 EST. AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsWe've been able to confirm some leaked information out of modmyi.com today that AT&T is doing us a solid by extending price protection for recent iPhone 3GS buyers by just a little bit. If you purchased a 3GS -- either the 16GB or 32GB model -- between May 7 and May 14, you'll have until June 14 to get credited the difference between the price you paid and the $149 / $199 they're charging now; if you bought it after the 14th of May, you'd have at least until the 14th of this month anyway, so it's effectively a one-week extension. If you'd rather trade up to an iPhone 4 rather than pocketing some cash and keeping the 3GS, you've got an option there, too: anyone who picked up a 3GS between May 7 and May 21 can preorder an iPhone 4 by June 21 and get the new phone for only the difference in cost, assuming you bring in your 3GS when you pick it up.
On a related note, modmyi.com is also reporting that AT&T corporate stores are set to open at 7AM on the 24th, iPhone 4 launch day, though we're not able to confirm this one. Word on the street is that new customers will only be able to activate one line and existing customers will be able to buy one iPhone 4 per line of service, clearly an attempt to stretch inventory as far as it'll go. With the way Apple's setting up for preorders and launch-day delivery, it seems like a lot of this chaos and bedlam is going to be avoided -- but hey, it's Apple. You never know.AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 15:01:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Will Billy Elliot be Peter Parker?
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsWord on the street (read: Bleeding Cool) is that Jamie Bell, the actor who played Billie Elliot back in the day, has been selected by Sony to be Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man movie. Because that's what you want: the movie studio selecting the star of a film, not like the director or anything. It's not official so don't freak out yet, but this is still a fine place to channel your nerd-outrage.

Ouch rumor: Project Natal will cost $150 stand-alone, part of $300 Xbox Arcade bundle this October
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsI sure hope for Microsoft's sake this isn't true. Word on the street is that Project Natal (which won't be the final name) will cost $150 and will launch in October. Considering Microsoft is aiming Natal at so-called casual gamers, what are the odds these people are going to shell out $150 to be able to play that paint-slinging game we've seen demoed over and over again?

What could be better than watching MLB games on your PS3?
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No CommentsBack in my day a video game console was a video game console. Now? They're all over the place. The latest example: Sony has inked a deal with Major League Baseball to bring live baseball games to a PS3 near you.

Crytek ‘working closely’ with Microsoft, Sony re: motion controls
Posted on April 16, 2010 | No CommentsPretty sure Crytek, of Crysis fame, is usually associated with blazing fast graphics cards and extreme edition processors, so color me surprised to see it embracing Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's Move. Surprised and disappointed, to be exact—I shan't be participating in this motion control business, that's for sure.

WWE SmackDown moves to SyFy: Remember when they used to have science fiction?
Posted on April 14, 2010 | No CommentsExciting—and confusing—TV news for y'all. For whatever reason, SyFy, once upon a time known as the Sci-Fi Channel, has agreed to air WWE Friday Night SmackDown! beginning in October. SyFy already airs WWE NXT (remember: we are wild and young), but now SmackDown? When did SyFy betray its roots of terrible alien movies and Stephen King movies?

Nikon developing a Canon G11 rival?
Posted on March 3, 2010 | No Comments
The Canon PowerShot G series have always been one of the best compact shooters available. See that pic above? I shot that back in 2003 with a G3. Beautiful, isn't? That's Camp Tapico in Northern Michigan, where I spent every summer of my teenage life. Anyway, word on the street is that Nikon wants some of the action that the G series has enjoyed all by itself for so long. Better late then never, Nikon.

Nintendo working on DS2, hands early dev kits to select few: Tilt controls ahoy
Posted on February 17, 2010 | No CommentsWord on the street is that Nintendo is currently working on the DS2. You probably already assumed as much, yes. But did you assume this: it will have tilt controls, sorta like the iPhone? I bet not. Or yes, whatever, doesn't really matter.

The latest movie franchise to be rebooted? Mortal Kombat. Yikes.
Posted on January 26, 2010 | No CommentsDoes the world need another Mortal Kombat movie? No, probably not, but that won't stop Hollywood from attempting to exploit a license that was last hot in 1994. Word on the street is that Warner Bros. wants to, yes, “reboot” the series. (Note: You cannot reboot a dead computer, so I don't know if it's possible to reboot a dead movie franchise.) To that end it has hired Oren Uziel to write the script. You've probably never heard of Uziel, but he wrote Shimmer Lake. You've probably never heard of that, either.

Touchscreen BlackBerry Bold-esque handset prototype caught on camera, possibly scrapped
Posted on January 21, 2010 | No Comments
Ever since RIM got their act together with the BlackBerry Storm 2, we've been pretty excited about their new-found interest in touchscreens. When word got out not too long ago that RIM was cracking away on a half-touchscreen/half-keyboard hybrid handset (think BlackBerry Bold, with a touchscreen), we started getting all hot around the collar. Word on the street (the cell phone rumor street. It's a tough place.) indicated the handset's nickname was "Dakota".
Aaaaaand here it is..

BlackBerry Bold 2 set for November 11 T-Mobile launch?
Posted on October 9, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, RIM, ATT, T-Mobile, BlackBerry OS
The word on the street is that the BlackBerry Bold 2 (aka 9700, aka Onyx) will be heading to T-Mobile -- and, subsequently, into the hands and hearts of the eager American public -- on November 11. This would seem to jibe with talk of AT&T and T-Mobile coming out parties slated for October 21, although we'll have to wait for an official announcement. On the other hand, we have seen enough of this device over the months that it would be a shock if its debut was anything less than imminent. Ms. Yuki must be ecstatic.

Anxious Sprint users ordering HTC Hero now through telesales
Posted on October 8, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA, Android
Too impatient to wait for October 11th to arrive? Yeah, we feel you. If you're up with killing a few minutes and dealing with what may end up being four or five CSRs, word on the street has it that the Android-powered Hero can be ordered this very moment via Sprint telesales. A number of members over at Sprint Users have had success in getting the phone headed their way, and one even mentioned that his SERO plan was set to remain firmly in place even with this new phone on the bill. Let us know if you stumble across similar luck in comments below, won't you?
