Xbox 360 Gets Live Sports In HD From ESPN. Canceling My Cable In 5, 4, 3…
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No Comments
Everyone is busy talking about Microsoft Kinect (the project formerly known as Natal), but to me, some much bigger news just dropped at E3 from Microsoft: ESPN live sports access. Simply put: this was the only thing holding me back from completely canceling my cable subscription. As soon as this goes live, I'm done with cable forever.
No, this live sporting access won't be entirely free, but it's one hell of a deal. You simply have be an Xbox Live Gold member (about $50 a year), and you'll get access to over 3,500 live events a year. In HD. Did I mention it was $50 a year? My cable bill is currently double that -- a month.

The U.S. Federal Government wants to take control of the Internet during ‘imminent cyber threat’
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsThe federal government wants to take control of the Internet in the event of an "imminent cyber threat," as declared by the president. What constitutes an "imminent cyber threat"? You'd need two things: a known, pretty darn big flaw in the network and knowledge that someone was planning on exploiting that flaw. So, if you received a tip that, say, hackers working for the government of Rival Country were planning to exploit some Internet flaw in the next few hours, you'd call the president and say, "Hola. We have an imminent cyber threat on our hands. You need to give is the signal to protocol into place." And the president does, and the federal government is now all up in your Internet, connecting your tubes, etc.

Windows Phone 7 pops up on a Samsung prototype device, plays Twin Blades
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsMicrosoft's Joe Belfiore certainly piqued our interest at MIX by demoing Windows Phone 7 on an unidentified Samsung handset, but our excitement soon faded when we found out it was just a hacked-up Omnia i8910 and not a real phone. Still, the Sammy remains only the third WP7 device we've seen other than the ASUS-built test mule and the prototype LG Panther that's been popping up recently after debuting on the Engadget Show, so these two videos of it running a recent WP7 build at reMIX in France is still quite notable -- the OS seems fast and responsive, and we're told everything on the device was functional, including the GPS and camera. What's more, there's a demo of an Xbox Live Arcade / iPhone game port called Twin Blades by Press Star Studio -- it was done in a week by one programmer using 90 percent of the Xbox Live code. That's impressive, to say the least.
Of course, this device may look like an Omnia, but it doesn't have the Omnia's OMAP3 processor -- as per WP7's requirements, the internals have been swapped for a Snapdragon-based board. We're still waiting for Microsoft and its partners to show us some more interesting hardware -- let's face it, the Panther and this Samsung are almost identically boring -- but there's no denying the software itself looks to be coming along quickly. Now let's just hope it launches with enough heat to save Microsoft from another executive shuffle. Video after the break.Continue reading Windows Phone 7 pops up on a Samsung prototype device, plays Twin Blades

Video: LG Panther WinPho 7 phone starts up for all to see
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No Comments
Would ya looky here! Looks like someone over at Innovative Singapore has posted a video that shows what it would be like to turn on a WinPho 7 phone for the very first time.
The device shown in the video (and right here) is the LG Panther, which has been making its way around the webs for a little while now.
It seems that LG will ditch the "Panther" monicker for a much more memorable "GW910", which is an issue I'll be taking up with their marketers directly.

PSN Premium rumor has the Internets shaking in its boots
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsIn my lower moments I can be found browsing various message boards, watching mere children argue over what video game console is superior, the Xbox 360 or the PS3. No, I'm not lying, sad as that may be. Eventually the PS3 supporters whip out this gem: "Yeah, well at least we don't have to pay to play online," which is a clever dig at Xbox Live's $50 price tag. Don't tell them this rumor, then: Sony will unveil a PSN Premium at E3 next month, and it will cost money.

Last Halo 2 Xbox Live player signs off
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No CommentsMicrosoft had tried to shutdown the original Xbox Live servers, but a couple of Halo 2 stalwarts had refused to log off! I guess Microsoft couldn't turn the servers off, or wouldn't, while people were still connected? No matter: the last Halo 2 Xbox Live player has signed off. We wish him well in his future endeavors.

Video: Chikara has a video game?!
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No CommentsI truly have seen everything now. Apparently Chikara, the Philadelphia-based pro-wrestling promotion that mixes lucha libre, puroresu, and general tomfoolery will be releasing its very own video game, Rudo Resurrection. ("Rudo" means "bad guy" in lucha libre lingo.) Absolutely zero details have been announced other than that it will be available for "multiple platforms."

What could be better than watching MLB games on your PS3?
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No CommentsBack in my day a video game console was a video game console. Now? They're all over the place. The latest example: Sony has inked a deal with Major League Baseball to bring live baseball games to a PS3 near you.

Microsoft, News Corp in talks over Xbox Live channel (but it’ll cost you $1 or $2 extra)
Posted on April 21, 2010 | No CommentsWould you be willing to pay an extra dollar or two per month for Xbox Live if you were able to watch live TV on it? That's what Microsoft and News Corp. execs are currently contemplating, with the two companies in talks over bringing a "young, male" channel to XBL. Now, this is all rumor and speculation, so no need to freak out if you're diametrically opposed to the idea.
