Celebrate Valentine’s Day with SteelSeries + Jinx loot

Rumor has it that today is Valentine's Day. Better check Techmeme to be sure. While I'll be celebrating by watching Atletico Madrid v. Barcelona later on, alone, you may not be so boring. The point is—there is a point, as hard as that may be to believe—that SteelSeries and Jinx would like to help you make the best of what may be a very awkward day for many of you, or us, as it were—as it is. The professional gaming accessory company and the nerdy t-shirt company (not that there's anything wrong with that) have put together a little contest where you can walk away with SteelSeries + Jinx loot. Makes sense. Cupid descends, shoots an arrow through your heart, then steals your wallet.

Google working on smartphone software to automatically translate foreign languages into your native tongue

Check your calendar, friends, for the first time in a long time I was just wowed by a tech story. Google says it's working on smartphone software that would automatically translate foreign languages into your native tongue. So, if you're talking to your Venezuelan pen pal, and he says, "No me gusta el fútbol americano," you can react in horror as you try to explain to him the importance of a game where more time is spent setting up plays than actually executing them is the greatest sport in the world. Porqueria.

Ringo Starr is not good at Rock Band. And?

Famous rock star Ringo Star was on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night, and he admitted that he's "crap" at Rock Band. This is news only in the loosest sense of the term because the headline should read, "Old man not good at video games."

SteelSeries has new gear for serious gamers

There is a certain market for gaming mice. These guys are the type that join an online FPS clan. They are the ones that yell at you for trying to have fun instead of cap’n the last flag. They obsess about framerates, lag, and 3DMark scores. But the key aspect of these nerds are that [...]

Tinkerers tack third-party motion sensor onto the Toshiba TG01

All accelerometers are not created equal. Some are more sensitive than others, while some are capable of working alongside other hardware. When Usuda Research Institute and Systems Corp started dabbling with the accelerometer in the TG01, it just wasn't enough for their needs. What were they to do? Yell at Toshiba? Tuck tail and give up? Nonsense. Rather than bothering with the built in accelerometer, they went ahead and tacked on their own.

iPhone Push problem broadcasts your AIMs to random recipients, could affect jailbroken/unlocked phones

Till Schadde, founder of development house Equinux has discovered an exploit - a broadcast error, really - that sends your AIM messages to random recipients without your knowledge or consent. The problem seems to happen in unlocked/jailbroken iPhones and results in a alert appearing on a recipients home screen bearing your message. Till tested the service by sending an AIM from the OS X desktop using iChat to his iPhone. He then received a reply back from a random recipient. It is clear that this is a Push problem in the message addressing - each iPhone is assigned its own identifier and receives messages from a central server operated by Apple - although this may change.

Quick Look: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 with Wii MotionPlus

As a longtime fan of the Tiger Woods series of golf games from EA Sports, I was quite disappointed with last year’s effort. You can read the review and yell at me if you’re so inclined, but I stand by the review. I took issue with what I called an “atrocious” putting system, the lack [...]

  • I don’t know if the new iPhone has a front camera, but it should

I don’t know if the new iPhone has a front camera, but it should

We're just two days away from Apple's WWDC keynote where it's expected to show off the next generation iPhone hardware. Not surprisingly, pictures are starting to surface on the web of the purported device — a French site, Nowhere Else, has a bunch of them, that have since been posted elsewhere. Who knows if the pictures are real or fake — it seems like just as often these days people yell "Photoshop," when the product is actually real as the vice-versa situation. But real or fake, I have to say that I hope they're real for one reason. While at first glance, that device looks nearly identical to the current iPhone (it seems like that will definitely be the case), there is one big difference: A front-facing camera. This is interesting to me for two reasons, because it could jump-start two trends: Mobile video chatting and the self-picture.
